Lionel Trains..A Success Throught The Years..Now There's The Lionel Trains Polar Express Train Set O Gauge
Lionel trains have a worldwide reputation for durability, quality, and craftsmanship, and have provided endless hours of fun for both operators and hobbyists. The Lionel Trains Polar Express Train Set is especially popular these days because of the Caldecott Award winning book "Polar Express", and the 1994 "Polar Express" movie. Millions of Lionel trains were manufactured in the 1940's and 1950's by the Lionel Company, which dominated the toy train genre from the 1920's to the 1960's. These days the original trains are highly sought by collectors and demand high prices. My ex-husband collected them for years. An easy way to identify the age of the trains is to examine the couplers, as those manufactured before the second World War used couplers that resembled a hook. is especially popular these days because of the Caldecott Award winning book "Polar Express", and the 1994 "Polar Express" movie. O Gauge Train
It Has Come A Long Way
There was a little difference between model railroads and toy trains prior to the 1950's. In that era more emphasis was put on realism for the O Gauge Train when crafting trains. Some of the earliest trains were made of tinplate. and were similar to HO scale except were very much wider and taller, and often comical in appearance. The toy trains in the 19th century were made of cast iron. In 1900 a German company called Marklin changed all this. They manufactured accessories for doll houses, and wished to manufacture a corresponding toy for boys. They got the idea to sell a O Gauge Train in sets with added accessories which could be purchased later, creating more revenue. This was the first clue of the upcoming model railroad layout with its scenery, buildings, and other props. Today some hobbyists only buy these items from the company who manufactured the train, a common practice of followers of Lionel.By the 1930's O Gauge was the most common in America, and remained so until the 1960's. At that time realism had not been considered. Beginning in the 1950's, realism in model railroading became more of a goal, thus the increased popularity of Lionel . Until then model trains had been thought of as toys, and the cost , durability and easy handling by youngsters were the prime considerations. An O Gauge Train was in its heyday when model railroads were categorized only as toys.
