All About the Polar Lands

The idea for this lens came about after finding this wonderful Interfact Book and Disk from our local library.  My kids love learning about animals and nature and this computer program made learning that much more fun for them.

As a home schooling mom, I love to do unit studies and share information and resources that I come across at my personal home school curriculum blog with others as well as inspirational words and resources at my website Christian Women's Resources to help strengthen the home and family.

Below I share with you some interesting facts I have learned through the World Book Encyclopedia on the Polar Lands as well as links to other websites and resources of interest.

Polar Lands Interesting Facts

Do you know the difference between a glacier and an iceberg? Glaciers are blankets of ice spread across the continent and icebergs are huge blocks of ice that have broken off the glaciers to form icebergs.

The famous ship known as the Titanic collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean in the year 1912.

Did you know the sun doesn't go down in the Summer time and the sun doesn't come up during the winter months?

Summer months in the Arctic are May, June and July and Summer months in the Antarctic are November, December and January.

Interesting Animal Facts and Links

There are many other animals besides Polar Bears and Penguins who can survive the cold temperatures of the Polar Lands.

Penguins and Seals are the only permanent residents of the Antarctic.

A bird called the Arctic Tern travels from one pole to the other each year traveling 18,600 miles.

There are many other animals that make the Arctic their home such as:

Wolverine
Narwhal
Dall Sheep

Interesting Facts on Penguins

Penguins survive the Antarctic weather because of their waterproof feathers and thick layer of blubber.

The Emperor Penguin is the largest penguin getting as big as 4 feet tall and weighing around 100 pounds.

Some penguins can dive up to 850 feet to search for fish.

Arctic Life

Considering I don't like the winters much here in Minnesota where I live, I wonder how people live in the Arctic where it is cold all year round and wonder what life really is like there. View the videos below to find out.

    Hi Lori,
What a fun lens! A while back, I had an idea for a really cute penguin craft; I started on it, but never finished it. I've been wondering what to do with that penguin; so now I know! I'll finish it up and share it with you. Thanks for the inspiration,
