2 Minutes to a Post Office Change of Address

Nearly 30 million people in the United States move each year. The one thing they all have in common is that they need to submit a Post Office Change of Address if they wish to have mail sent to their old address forwarded to their new one.

But when someone is preparing for a big move, they are often very busy, and don't want the hassle of getting the Change of Address form, filling it out, and mailing it in. Also on forms filled out by hand, it is likelier that mistakes will be made as the information may be read incorrectly or entered incorrectly into the system. For these and other reasons, changing your address online is the best way to go.

Post Office Change of Address Facts

Important Things to Know

When a Change of Address is submitted to the Post Office, First Class, Priority Mail, and Expess Mail that is addressed in your name to the old address will be forwarded to the new address for a period of one year from the start date. Periodicals (such as magazines and journals) will be forwarded for 60 days. Most Standard Mail (advertisements, circulars, flyers, and non-profit org. mail) is not forwarded unless there are special instructions from the mailer to do so.

After one year the mail will be returned to the sender with a yellow sticker informing the sender of your new address. Changes of Address are kept on file for 18 months. After that the mail may be delivered as addressed or returned to the sender as "Attempted Not Known" or "Unable to Forward". By that time, your mailers should have your new address.

In addition to submitting a Post Office change of address, you should also notify all the important people you receive mail from of your new address. This would include banks, credit card companies, attorneys, doctors, your place of worship, friends and relatives, and anyone else who may send you important mailings.

Temporary Changes of Address

When You Plan on Moving Back

The Postal Service also allows Temporary Change of Address requests to be submitted online. They recently reduced the time limit of a temporary change of address from one year to six months. If you plan on returning to your old address within six months, this is when a temporary change of address would be filed. Anything over six months is now considered a "permanent" change of address.

For a Temporary Change of Address, you include the date you want the post office to stop forwarding mail and start delivering it again to your old address.

Post Office Change of Address Form

Family or Individual | Permanent or Temporary

The Post Office Change of Address form is pretty self-explanatory. The basic information is the name of the person or persons who are moving, the old address that they are moving from and the new address they are moving to. It asks for the start date which is the date you want the post office to stop delivering mail to your old address and begin the process of forwarding it to your new address. The form also asks if the move is permanent (meaning you do not intend to move back in the next 6 months) or temporary (meaning you do intend to come back to your old address within 6 months from the start date). If it is a temporary change of address, you indicate the date you wish the post office to stop forwarding your mail, at which time they will resume delivery to your old address as normal unless you instruct them to hold your mail until you return.

The form also asks if you are requesting the address change for a "Family" or an "Individual". You should note that the postal service does not know the last names of everyone in your family. By "family", the postal service is going by last name. If you check the family box, everyone with that last name at your old address will have their mail forwarded to the new address you indicate. If members of your family have different last names, you should file a separate change of address for each last name. Similarly, if people with the same last name are splitting up and moving to different residences, you should file a separate "Individual" change of address for each member of the family. The same is true if not everyone with the same last name is moving out. Each person who is moving out should fill out an "individual" change of address.

If you receive mail in any other name at your home (such as mail in a business name), you should also file a separate form with the name of the business.

By doing this, you ensure that everyone's mail will be delivered to the right place.
