LOL, you made my day. I have a few of these stories myself ;)
  • vallain Feb 20, 2012 @ 6:58 pm | delete
What a fun collection of memories and so nicely showcased. I had my shares of cooking disasters (don't put frozen shrimp into hot oil unless you want to set the kitchen on fire).
    Blessed.
  • WildFacesGallery Jan 29, 2012 @ 1:28 pm | delete
Thanks for sharing your disasters. Not much of a cook myself beyond meat and potatoes. Your shepherds pie sounds like something I need to try.
  • Koupie Jan 19, 2012 @ 1:02 pm | delete
I do NOT like to cook :) Let me clean and you do the cooking any day. Luckily I have a husband who likes to cook and he is really good. Excellent lens! Angel Blessed

I cook because I have to,... I don't like it at all! But I am trying to experiment with different recipes!

I will try your recipes,.. hopefully I will be a pretty good cook one day!
  • YayasHome Sep 22, 2011 @ 12:08 am | delete
I'm trying to decide which of your recipes sounds most enticing. Since cooking is also not one of my favorite chores, I'm sure that if I emulate your style I could learn to love cooking. Now, I hafta' contemplate how my good hubby-buddy will react when I make him a big pot of 'Potholder Soup.' P'rhaps he will think I've added a new type of veggie to the soup, ya' think? :)
  • sorana Sep 9, 2011 @ 11:00 pm | delete
Beautiful lens. I can see why this is your favourite. Great recipes. :)
  • orange3 Sep 7, 2011 @ 9:43 am | delete
Great stories! I love to cook but my mother is a terrible cook! Some of your stories reminded me of her. Haha!
  • mommytalks Aug 25, 2011 @ 12:24 am | delete
LOL - I think that broccoli story is hilarious! I will probably always think of that now when I cut some up! : )
  • Graceonline Aug 3, 2011 @ 5:41 pm | delete
I could tell a few tales m'self. But I love to cook now. It's becoming a bit of a hobby.

  • Beautiful-Bridal May 23, 2011 @ 2:21 pm | delete
I love your potholder soup story! My own problem as a newlywed was forgetting to cook anything for dinner at all.
  • terrapin719 May 18, 2011 @ 11:07 am | delete
I love your cooking stories ~ I'm a pretty awful cook myself so it's a good thing my husband can cook (and likes to cook) or we'd all go hungry LOL
  • JennySui May 18, 2011 @ 9:49 am | delete
    I love cooking. Nice lens!

    I remember these stories well!
  • Senora_M Dec 16, 2010 @ 11:28 am | delete
:) LOL. Great lens! I do cook sometimes, but I'm much better at sewing! I have a few items that are easy and my world famous chocolate chip cookies--Crisco stick recipe with Mexican vanilla. It makes all the difference in the world!
  • poddys Dec 14, 2010 @ 2:36 pm | delete
Well you definitely have some interesting recipes. I loved the broccoli story :) The Shepherds Pie sounds good, but nothing like the "real" Shepherds Pie" we make here in England. I love the way that dishes can be interpreted in different ways.
  • Jodi_k Dec 7, 2010 @ 9:36 am | delete
I love to cook. Your story about the broccoli reminds me of a friend who didn't recognize a whole cucumber when she saw one at my house (she'd only seen them peeled and sliced in salads).
  • littlelu Dec 6, 2010 @ 7:01 am | delete
Hello again Elf :) I just made it to level 47 to find I'm in good company. Thought you might like to know that you are tall in my eyes as I only clock in at 4 foot 10 (and 1/2, on a good day).
Another great lens, I've certainly had my own challenges in the cooking area.

Just discovered your page on the "Food and Cooking Side Ads"! Wonderfully charming read and here, here for getting dad's approval of your cooking. You just gotta add this and more of your food and cooking pages to my site FoodLoversWeb.com...I'd sure love to have ya join us!
  • Momsbusy247 Nov 28, 2010 @ 5:44 pm | delete
I do like to cook and your potholder soup brought you many a memory and story to be told, so, it was the best soup ever.
  • mcochs Nov 22, 2010 @ 2:52 am | delete
Awesome lens! Thanks for sharing the recipes!
  • sousababy Nov 20, 2010 @ 8:32 pm | delete
Yeah, I love soup, especially during our cold Canadian winters. Too often, though, they are too salty. I can't knit and my sewing skills are mainly for buttons that came loose on my daughter's clothes. I loved how you told this story, very enjoyable.
  • Nightowl_John Nov 12, 2010 @ 3:18 pm | delete
Yes, I like to cook, but my wife does most of it. My oldest daughter is in Culinary school! Thanks for a fun lens to read!
  • lemonsqueezy Nov 9, 2010 @ 9:48 pm | delete
I love to cook. I applaud you for keeping up the effort. This was very fun to read.
  • hotbrain Nov 9, 2010 @ 7:35 pm | delete
This was a great funny lens! I especially had to laugh at the broccoli story! If you'd had the internet back then it probably could have been avoided by googling broccoli :) Yes, I like to cook, but didn't always know how... It sure is a learning process...
  • rachsue Nov 9, 2010 @ 6:52 pm | delete
I have to admit, that was one of the funniest lenses I have read. I am glad it all work out for you in the end..LOL. Thank you for sharing your stories and such a great lens!! I myself, think I am a good cook, but my family does not always agree!!
  • rwoman Nov 2, 2010 @ 12:47 pm | delete

  • BuckHawk Oct 25, 2010 @ 1:01 pm | delete
Hahahaha, I'm laughing all the way to the stove! Your cooking escapes sound so much like mine. But, I'm still a lousy cook. I never grew up, I guess. Great job.
  • ArtByLinda Oct 22, 2010 @ 8:04 pm | delete
Your Potholder soup story is so funny, I can just imagine that you might get a little ribbing from your hubby over the years over this. I can really relate. When I was first married I soon learned that I knew nothing about cooking at all! LOL
  • Jimmie Sep 29, 2010 @ 9:05 pm | delete
Your stories are wonderful. It's almost hard to believe all the mistakes you made! :-)
My mom was (is) a great cook, and she taught me. But all great cooks have disasters at times. We joke about the TIMBER cake because the layers kept sliding off -- TIMBER... there she falls!
  • glockr Sep 20, 2010 @ 9:41 am | delete
Very nice lens. Reminds me of the first time I tried to cook for my wife.
  • DecoratingforEvents Sep 18, 2010 @ 7:27 pm | delete
I am sitting in my screened porch with my laptop reading this lens. The Florida night are is great and I like to see the dogs as the owners are walking them. As I was reading, I let out a howl of laughter (scaring the owner and the dog started yipping). They were looking all around to see where it was coming from!

I laughed so hard through this whole lens. Thanks for sharing and being able to laugh at yourself! <3

Dropping in to thank you for the lensroll and to lensroll you back. ...Have to give you a lot of credit with your Chris' birthday cakes and all of the trials at learning to cook; you have certainly been determined! Congratulations on dad's kudos and for the winning recipe. :)

Thanks, Mimi. Cooking has never been a favorite chore of mine, and still isn't, although I DID finally learn to cook edible meals :o). At least no one 'starved'.

  • wvclaylady Jun 29, 2010 @ 12:20 am | delete
I loved your stories! They remind me of once when I was younger, I wanted to make chicken livers and onions. When I grew up, we always boiled chicken before frying it, so I figured it was the same with chicken livers. So, I put them in boiling water, and left them to cook. When I came back a little while later to give them a stir, I found I had successfully made a pot of chicken liver SOUP! LOL They had completely fallen apart, and it was just a gray, watery mess. Well, I later learned that I should have just floured them and fried them. They were much better the second time around! LOL
  • Wednesday_Elf Jun 29, 2010 @ 8:18 am | delete
What a funny story! Nice to know I'm not the only one who had cooking 'disasters'! :) Thanks for sharing!

Back after a while just to tell you how happy I am for this page having got Lens of the Day, brought sales and simply because your first soup looked a lot like my first one...
  • vanidiana Jun 23, 2010 @ 3:13 am | delete
Nice story...! I couldn't cook anything but instant noodles back in college, too, and now I can be proud whenever hubby tells me that I have cooked him a delicious food!
  • Chris Jun 22, 2010 @ 7:29 pm | delete
Well that was an entertaining lens. So Shepards Pie is it? All these years I have referred to it as cream corn casserole. Not a fan of cream corn. And yes you did become a good cook. No complaints here. Although I am a bit older than two now, I still like to lick the beaters. Chocolate Chip cookie dough is still my fav.

This lens has brought a smile to my face today - thank you for sharing all of your funny cooking adventures - the broccoli story was great and the 2nd birthday cake was nearly as good as my brother's engagement cake where his (soon to be) mother in law spelt his name wrong!
  • hayleylou Jun 20, 2010 @ 9:34 pm | delete
Congrats on LOTD and thanks for making me laugh. The Stroganoff sanwich recipe sounds yummy so I am favouriting your lens so that I can return for it later. Thumbs up :)

Huge Congrats on the LotD!!! I'm so happy for you. Updating to lensroll to Fantasy Dinner and all my recipe lenses . Even though I have not really thought of myself as a cook, I surprisingly have quite a few now. You've shown us that it doesn't matter. We all learn something eventually. :D

Congratulation on LOTD. What a delightful lens you had me laughing out loud as I had memories of learning how to cook. Mom taught me how to cook so when I left home I was a fair cook. But I always wanted to do my "own" version of the way that Mom did it.
  • Gloriousconfusion Jun 19, 2010 @ 4:16 am | delete
That was good fun! When I got married, I had no idea how to cook, because we had a cook when I was a child in Africa, and I wasn't even allowed in the kitchen, in case I got in his way. My mother-in-law became my teacher, which was no bad thing, as I could then cook food for my husband "like momma used to make", but there were a lot of mistakes along the way to my becoming the fairly good cook I am today.
  • LKW31 Jun 19, 2010 @ 3:15 am | delete

I think we all have had bad experiences in the kitchen. I remember when I was first learning to bake cakes (and was getting pretty good at it) when I tried my first batch of cupcakes. The cupcakes came out great, but I wanted to use my mother's recipe for chocolate frosting on them. So I put all of the ingredients into a sauce pan, and heated it up on low heat, stirring frequently. When the frosting was done, I started to scoop some up and it was a rock. I used a rubber spatula to stir the frosting while heating, and you guessed it, the rubber spatula melted into the frosting. To this day, I have never used another rubber spatula! Congrats on LOTD!

Thanks so much for sharing - what a nice break for me in the middle of my workday!!! I'm not a good cook at all. I've given it up since my children all moved out. Despite my ineptness, I don't have any stories as nearly as good as yours!!! congrats on LOTD. Have to e-mail this to my sister who IS a wonderful cook!
  • judy greer Jun 18, 2010 @ 1:07 pm | delete
I count my self a pretty good cook right now, but sounds so much like me at 18 and trying to put a meal on the table, and baking pies then was a com plete disaster. Got pretty good over the years but I sure would hope that I have learned a little since I am now 69
  • NanLT Jun 18, 2010 @ 12:01 pm | delete
I tell people that if they've never had a disaster in the kitchen, they haven't been cooking long enough. Love your stories. Don't know if I'd be brave enough to share some of my own. :-)
  • stacy_mcdaniel Jun 18, 2010 @ 12:01 pm | delete
I can remember trying to make homemade biscuits and gravy for the first time. I used all-purpose flour instead of self-rising. My husband and I ate as much as we could. But, it was really yucky. Congrats on LOTD! Fun Lens!

No, I don't enjoy cooking! You story is too funny and I can really relate to it. Have a wonderful summer!
  • Sylvestermouse May 22, 2010 @ 2:03 pm | delete
This is absolutely hilarious! I am not sure which is my favorite story. I used to love to cook when I had plenty of people to serve. Now that it is just me and my lifelong sweetheart most of the time, simplicity is the name of the cooking game for me, like a can of soup. I guess we have just turned into old poos :) I still cook up a storm for birthdays and holidays though.

Like, well that's not the word I would pick for the normal everyday cooking job. For that is what it is, a job. However, occasionally I do enjoy preparing something special so I guess then I like to cook.

Your lens did remind me of my lemon meringue soup legend...

Reminds me of the time, as a teen, I was cooking dinner for my family of 4, called my mother at work and asked "should I cook the whole (3 pound) box of spaghetti?" Mom said "yes" and we all regretted it for the rest of the week as we valiantly tried to eat through all that spaghetti.

Yours lens is great. I love your stories. I suspect many of us have similar stories, if we were to be honest about it! LOL Yes, I like to cook also. I worked as a restaurant cook for eight years, long ago. After that, I didn't cook much for quite some time. I was tired of cooking. Now I enjoy it once again.
  • poutine Apr 10, 2010 @ 12:46 pm | delete
Your learning "how to cook" made for quite a hilarious anecdote.

Hilarious stories of learning to cook!
  • KathyMcGraw Jan 26, 2010 @ 1:15 am | delete
I missed this last month, but so glad I found it tonight, this is too funny! I remember my first turkey. Cooked it up just fine, and even gave most of it to a neighbor. She served it to her husband, and when he was carving he saw that the bags of gizzards and neck were still inside. No one told me to look "inside" the thing :) *Blessed* by an Angel...very well done.
  • mitchking Jan 22, 2010 @ 11:01 am | delete
I have burned many potholders in my attempt to cook. Needless to say they know my name well at the local restaurants.
  • Pukeko Jan 21, 2010 @ 1:21 pm | delete
Fantastic stories. Love the potholder soup. Did it spoil the potholder?
  • bengriston Jan 20, 2010 @ 2:16 pm | delete
I love to cook but I have to admit that when I first started out even the dog would not eat it. But with practice I am coming along nicely.
  • JenOfChicago Jan 19, 2010 @ 5:44 pm | delete
    Ha, very cute stories!
  • SoyCandleLover-Maker Jan 16, 2010 @ 10:21 pm | delete
No disasters exactly, but have made quite a few bland recipes in my early attempts to cook. I think I may have been intimated by spices since my mom used very little. My husband, however, has burned a hot dog twice. I don't mean he burned two hot dogs, but one on both sides. I try not to comment when he's cooking on the grill. :D Great stories reminding me of hot dogs with potatoes, hot dogs with Mac & cheese, and so on. 5 stars and thanks for the giggles.

  • kimberly Jan 15, 2010 @ 11:02 pm | delete
wonderful stories, mom! and I loved the pics of Chris . I remember poking at something you had under a tea towel in a bowl. It turned out to be bread that was trying to rise! Mom? What's this ? oops! Of course now I want to make my own homemade bread! Keep up the great lenses! and congratulations!
  • Upon-Request Jan 12, 2010 @ 9:39 pm | delete
I love the cooking stories! My first "disaster" was with a microwave at my aunt's house (we didn't have one yet at home). She said it cooked anything... she should have said "except hard boiled eggs"! ;)
  • ElizabethJeanAllen Jan 11, 2010 @ 7:57 pm | delete
I grew up cooking and enjoyed it, but over the years the kitchen has become my husband's domain. He does the bulk of the cooking today. I make a guest appearance every now and then.
Great lens. I loved the stories, especially the hot dog one. I'll bet that pan was fun to clean.
    Thanks for sharing

I love your stories and I can truly relate to the cooking mishaps - had one too many as a newlywed myself. I think it's hilarious that you won at a recipe contest - what a great way to redeem yourself! (Of course no one has to know that it wasn't an original recipe LOL). Too funny for words! (:

My mother also had the "I Hate to Cook Book"! I love your stories here, especially the broccoli disaster. And Potholder Soup indeed, haven't we all had some similar experience (or is it only those of us who aren't in the gourmet chef crowd)!
  • kimmanleyort Dec 1, 2009 @ 12:52 pm | delete
I have gradually learned to cook a little but I am always saved by my husband who is a gourmet cook. This lens was very entertaining. It made me laugh out loud.

I had not thought about the I Hate to Cook Book in years! My mom had that one and I remember how funny it was. I love your stories. I plan on making PotHolder soup next time my husband complains about a meal. 5 stars
  • crosscreations Nov 7, 2009 @ 8:43 am | delete
LOL from a fellow non-cook! Potholder soup is hilarious and a perfect name for these comical stories. Once this lady was determined to explain to me how she makes cheese cake...she didn't know me well but a friend who DOES know how much I hate to cook was there and when this lady got to the part where...'now you get out your spring-loaded cake pan' my friend couldn't stand it any more and BURST out laughing! I'm sure I must have had some totally clueless look on my face...I don't even WANT to know the meaning of a spring-loaded cake pan and she KNEW it. SO funny!
  • theherbivorehippie Nov 5, 2009 @ 5:55 pm | delete
I am dying laughing over the brocolli story! I remember the first time I bought an eggplant because I thought the color was pretty but had no clue what it was and had to call my mom and describe it to her and ask what to do with it....of course she had to put me on speaker phone so both my aunts could hear too...lol Awesome lens! So fun!

Thanks so much for the lovely angel blessing. I'm so pleased you liked my cooking stories in this lens. Interesting to find out through all these wonderful comments that I'm not alone in making a 'disaster' out of cooking when I first began.
  • Stazjia Oct 17, 2009 @ 9:39 am | delete
You made me laugh out loud with your story about the broccoli. I can remember some of the desperate cooking disasters I had when I was first married but have since turned into a good cook so I can relate to you. Blessed by an Angel.

Oh, can I ever relate! Not only from my college days but all the way up till now, at 40 and having been married for 11 years. I still have my moments! So that makes your stories even funnier to me, because I found myself nodding and thinking, uh-huh, been there, done something a LOT like that! And that "First Time Cooking" photo looks SO much like something you would have seen on my own stove. Love this lens, Pat!

I'm very honored that this lens received an angel blessing, especially from you, Joan. And how special to be featured on Growwear's Squidoo Lens Review. After all the years of having my 'cooking' mistakes stories told by my family, it was great fun to write this lens and tell all these stories at once. Cooking has never really been "My Thing", so I've never minded 'laughing at myself' over cooking!
  • CherylK Oct 11, 2009 @ 1:05 pm | delete
Sure was fun reading all your cooking stories! I've had that Cooking for Two cookbook for about 30 years. When my mother was a young bride she decided to surprise my father with pumpkin pie. She made a crust and scooped pumpkin from a can into it and baked it. Needless to say, it was awful...the poor thing didn't realize that she needed to add sugar, spices and cream...we still chuckle about that!
  • CCGAL Oct 10, 2009 @ 4:46 pm | delete
Lovely lens, heartwarming stories, and an excellent bit of entertainment for me this dreary day. Loved the potholder soup story! Although I think I was almost born cooking, I have both of Peg Bracken's "I Hate To Cook" books and I love many of the recipes in them. I have a daughter who thinks cooking is dialing up Domino's, so I can totally relate to your stories. 5* and a fav!
  • 24websurf Oct 10, 2009 @ 10:57 am | delete
I am not sure whether to laugh or cry or both! I want to laugh because it is hilarious and wonderfully written! Having had some catastrophes myself in the kitchen I feel terrible for you, and your victims :) This was a wonderful lens and that broccoli story had me laughing so hard I woke up the dog! Fived and Faved!
  • Susan52 Oct 10, 2009 @ 10:24 am | delete
LOL at your stories! I've always been an okay cook but have one similar story that I recall, the rubber cake story. (You don't want to know, but I hope my brother-who-never-forgets doesn't read this and tell on me!)
  • Joan4 Oct 10, 2009 @ 10:22 am | delete
Hilarious and far too familiar! We survived with that "I hate to cook book"! I still love to make "stay a bed stew" ! lol Blessed by a SquidAngel! Congratulations on being featured on Squidoo Lens Reviews, too! Growwear has a knack for finding the bestest lenses!

Very funny 'cooking' joke, Joan. That was about right for my early cooking attempts :-).
  • _Joan_ Oct 10, 2009 @ 12:00 am | delete
    Delightful stories! 5*

There's the old joke where the newlywed wife is talking to her husband and says, "Well, I think my cooking is coming along OK. I know how to make two dishes now -- meat loaf and banana pudding." Her husband replies, "That's wonderful, dear! Which one is this?"

Very entertaining lens. I can identify with your culinary journey. My husband endured many tasteless meals before I mastered the art of cooking. He still refuses to eat tuna casserole. It seemed to be the only thing I could assemble with any success in my early years of marriage.
