Potty Training Your Toddler

Does the thought of potty training your child both excite and exhaust you at the same time? It did me! I was very ready to move out of the diaper stage, and yet the thought of all the time it would require of me, the patience, the attentiveness to the clock, and so fourth was a bit overwhelming. After all, potty training is a difficult task to master until the child is ready. Or is it? I beleive with the right information, potty training can be a much easier experience for both the child and the parent. And because it is such an important milestone in a child's development, it should be looked upon favorably, rather that with disdain.

Potty Training - Is Your Child Ready?

Potty training is a very important developmental milestone that every child needs to reach successfully. And although it seems as though it has to be a difficult task to accomplish, with the right toilet training methods, it can be easy and painless for both you and your child. The first step is determining if your child is ready.

Here are a couple of signs to watch for:
1. Your child is able to keep their diaper dry for two hours at a time or more.
2. Can pull their pants up and down.
3. Can follow simple instructions.
4. Understands when they are urinating or "going potty."
5. Can sit still for a couple of minutes without being upset by it.
6. Can walk or run fairly well- sometimes a quick trip to the bathroom is necessary.
7. Shows an interest in potty training, the toilet, "big kid underwear" or what you are doing when you go potty. You can help peak their interest by talking about it or pointing certain things out- like the potty, underwear, using the toilet.

Check out this Statistic:

Studies released by Harvard University in 1956 revealed that 80% of American kids were potty trained by the age of 2 years.

Potty Training Pitfalls....

Avoid these situations:

Once you start potty training, there are a few things to keep in mind to make the experience better for both of you:

1. Beginning during a stressful time.
2. Punishing your child for accidents.
3. Forcing them to sit for prolonged periods on the potty
4. Moving them from diapers to underwear right after beginning the training
5. Putting them in clothes that are hard for them to remove.
6. Injuring your childs self-esteem and thus motivation to try.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. Your comment made me chuckle out loud. Once potty trained, all they want to do is put things in it, flush, flush, flush, waste the TP etc. LOL!

Thanks for the information. I remember when my son would run all over the house trying to avoid the "white monster"...lol. It's funny how we try so hard to get them to use the toilet at first. But once they get potty trained the challenge is to get them away from the toilet!!!

Great tips. We potty trained my grandson, by taking his diaper off all together. Sure was hard for this old lady to run around behind him all day to make sure he didn't find a corner somewhere. LOL
