Potty Training Prep!

What to know...Before you go commando!

Okay, so you've had it. While your child plays blissfully in cushy Pampers, you secretly plot for the day when he will gleefully trade the super absorbent inner lining for a pair of Batman underroos or pretty Ariel panties. Yet, no matter what you do, they just won't sit on the potty!

Luckily, there is a way to potty train even the most stubborn child. But first, you need to know if they are truly ready to potty train. While some children literally potty train themselves when they are ready, the large majority of them need a little push in the right direction. Before you begin, you need to ask yourself a few very important questions about your child.

1. Does your child have 1-2 bowel movements a day, at fairy predictable times?
2. Does your child wake up from naps and sometimes in the morning with a dry diaper?
3. Can your child pull up their underwear and take them off all by themselves?
4. Are YOU truly ready to become diaper free? Are you ready to begin and not look back?

If you answered yes to most of these questions....then YOU are ready to be DIAPER FREE!!!

Best Buys:

What to DO before you go commando!

A week or two before the big day, buy a few audio/visual aids to help get your child excited about becoming a "BIG KID". Show your child the potty training videos several times a day and read potty training books at night. Let your child begin to get excited about becoming a "BIG KID" at their own pace. Now is not the time to try putting them on the potty or pressuring them to wear underwear. This is a passive phase and one that is VERY important. Children need to know what is expected of them. This takes the fear out of flushing and the pressure OFF of potty training.

The BIG Day!!!

Be Strong.....a Diaper Free life is just within reach

By now, your child should know exactly what potty training is all about. After watching the videos and reading the books, he/she should be talking about being a BIG KID. But don't panic if they aren't yet...even the most reluctant child will get the hang of it rather quickly.
On the night before the big day, tell your child over and over again that TOMORROW is the BIG DAY!!!! Let them know ahead of time that in the morning they will be saying Bye Bye to diapers and wearing big kid underwear!
When they wake up, take them to the potty and begin the day. Take away all diapers and have your child participate in discarding them. Put them in real big kid underwear, NOT PULLUPS! The idea is that they need to be able to feel the wetness in order to make the appropriate associations.

Ready...AIM....
Every hour, take your child to the potty and place them on it. Read them their favorite potty story and discuss how great it will be when they are a big kid. Don't worry if your child has a few accidents that day. They need to have accidents so that they understand what the sensation to go to the bathroom feels like.

Positive Reinforcement:

If your child is really into stickers, use a sticker chart. Every time they use the potty, let them place their favorite sticker on the chart, so they can see their progress. At first, progress will be slow, but in a day or two, you should see some MAJOR improvement.

If the weather is nice, you may want to consider spending the day outside. This will keep the mess off of your carpets and floors, but it will still give them the chance to learn.

DRINK UP!!!

DON'T limit the amount of drinks they have. While you may be tempted to do so, limiting their fluids will only complicate things by making them constipated. Once you start the constipation cycle, it is a difficult one to break. Besides, your little one needs all the practice they can get in the first few days. Frequent trips to the potty is a good thing because it gives you a chance to reward positive behavior.

Commit to your potty 911 plan for a full week. By the end of the week, almost every child will have made significant progress and you may very well find yourself living a DIAPER FREE LIFE!!!!
