Potty Training Your Shih Tzu Puppy

Is your Shih Tzu puppy potty trained yet? No? Well, not to worry. It can be easier than you may imagine. Using proven techniques, little accidents can become a thing of the past. Get the whole family involved, since rarely is any one person at home all day.

Potty training for Shih Tzu puppies, or any puppy for that matter, can be a stressful time for all involved but, most rewarding when completed and successful. Fortunately, Shih Tzu's don't require a lot of training.

Is Potty Training a Shih Tzu Puppy Hard?

Certain breeds take to potty training easier than others. Here's a helpful tip to keep in mind before the training begins. Shih Tzu's are companion animals and tend to reflect the behavior, stress level, and personality of the household. If you're stressed out, so will be your puppy. If you're angry, your Shih Tzu will most likely display fearful behavior. If you're relaxed, your puppy will be also.

So, figure out your personality type. If you're a bit high-strung, chill out. It'll be good for you and puppy.

Can Potty Training Start Too Early?

There was a time when it was thought that puppies weren't capable of learning before they were at least 6 months old. That mind-set has long been disproved. The puppy brain goes through a stage of rapid development, beginning at the age of 3 weeks. Puppies are like sponges. They absorb huge amounts of information about places, people and behavior.

Though training a puppy at any age can be a challenge, don't let that super-absorbent puppy brain go to waste. Start early, and reap the rewards of teaching your little friend when and where potty takes place.

Learn to Potty Train Your Puppy

Instead of going by hearsay, or using some old, ineffective methods like pushing your puppy's nose in it, swatting with a newspaper, or yelling at her. There are e-books and audio programs that teach more effective methods that are easier to use on a consistent basis.

And, consistency is a must in successful potty training of your Shih Tzu puppy.

You can hire a professional trainer, but that requires them to come to your home, and puppies require potty training all day. The trainer can give you direction. But, it will be up to you and your family, working together, to make it happen.

Everyone Loves a Potty Trained Puppy

If you had a complete do-it-yourself program, your puppy could get the consistent training she needs. And, after the potty training, you may want her to learn other necessary commands like sit, stay, come, or put it down.

It's a great experience to have a well-trained puppy. Your Shih Tzu puppy can be a welcomed and enjoyed member of the family. Have fun, and your puppy will too.
