Power Max GX920 Irons as alternative to the Callaway® X-18 Irons
What we think: our review of the Power Max GX920 Irons
Enjoy those great looksThe Power Max GX920 Irons look sleeker than i.e. earlier Callaway models like the X-14 and X-16, and are made from polished stainless steel with a large cavity (fancifully called 'notch cavity technology'). All the metal that would have been where the cavity is has been shifted to the 'rim' of the club head. This so called 'maximized perimeter weighting' results in a thinner face as well as a wider top line and wider sole. The thinner face give your shots more 'spring' while the wider sole makes it easier to cut thru rough if you tend to spray your tee shots.
So, how did it perform?
Some of our testers who were more accustomed to blade irons initially hit most of their shots fat (due to the cavity back) but adapted quickly. The irons provide moderate feedback, and it is not easy to tell where the ball made impact at the clubface. This is not really an issue as the clubs are very forgiving, and even off-center hits are reasonably straight. This is most likely due to the rather low center of gravity which should reduce the twisting of the club during the swing.
We also found that the balls flew higher than those hit with blades and rolled very little, both considered good characteristics. Distance was about the same, but control was better with the Power Max GX920. As expected the mid to high irons were the easiest to hit but hey, we are no 'Vijays' here.
As so often these iron are only available for right handed players, as always something we don't like.
Our verdict
The Power Max GX920 Irons are a good choice for a beginning player, or an intermediate who only plays occasionally. They proved to be reliable, are well balanced and are easy to hit. They are very forgiving and give decent distance.
