Power Sanders

Power sanders are a great tool used to improve the surface quality and appearance of wood. They are a must for any carpenter, handy man or any do it yourselfers out there. There are diifferent power sanders that are better matches for their specific applications.

The most common power sanders used are belt sanders, orbital sanders, finishing sanders and disc sanders.

Belt Sanders

Belt sanders are a type of power sander that use a continuous belt of a man made abrasive material. The belts run over a pair of drive pulleys at opposing ends that are powered by a chain, cogged belt, or gear drive that is located at the rear pulley.

The belts typically travel at 1,300 feet per minute or faster and are usually 3-4 inches wide. Different grits are available which range from fine to coarse. You can also choose the option of having a dust collecting bag system or running without one.

Orbital Sanders and Finishing Sanders

Finishing sanders, also called straight line sanders, and orbital sanders are similar in both their appearance and in their operation. You can often find them combined in one tool with a switch to change from one operation to the other.

Both sanders are used for finer finishing work and are not as useful for heavy sanding.

Disc Sanders

Disc sanders come in two makes, the angle head which is where the disc runs parallel to the motor, and the vertical style where the disc runs perpendicular to the motor. Disc sanders are more commonly used for metal sanding or grinding. But they are also very capable of removing stock in plastics, wood, or even concrete if used with the proper accessory stone, disc or wheel.
