Shipwreck of the Prins Willem

Ranked #28,870 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #618,035 overall

The History of the Prins Willem V

The Prins Willem, known locally by divers as the Willie is located in Lake Michigan three miles off shore of Milwaukee. The ship was 250 long and was built in Holland in 1954. It sunk in 1954.

Her final resting place is not her first trip to the bottom. During World War II while she was still under construction she was scuttled to hide her from the Nazi war machine. after the was she was raised and finished.

The Willie sunk after a collision with a tug with no loss of life.

The Dive

The wreck sits on it side so as you descend it looks exactly like the picture below. The windows on the side are fifteen feet long. When I first started to dive the wreck we were thrilled if we could see a whole window. With the advent of the zebra muscles we nearly always see a whole window and often all the windows.

The best visibility is when the water is the coldest so be prepared with dry suit or at least a seven mil wet suit.

The detail on this wreck is spectacular from the radio masts to the name on the stern.

In the rear cargo hold there are remnants of canvas lift bags which I am told but cannot find documentation that were used to try salvage the wreck.

The holds and the pilot house are easy penetrations but this wreck has claimed several divers so do not penetrate without proper training and equipment.

The most popular way to visit the wreck is aboard the Len-Der charter run by Jerry Guyer who found this and many other of the Milwaukee wrecks. there are great pictures on their web site.

couple of things - 1. title of the comments has a typo, should be Add, not Ad.
    2. You say it was built in 1954 in the intro, so how did it sink in WW2?
    Otherwise an interesting lens!
