What does 'saving energy' mean ?

Save Energy

We use electrical energy in our homes for cooking, heating, TV. Etc. We also use fuel energy in our cars, and we may use energy by burning wood or coal in our homes. The main ways most of us can save energy are by:
1. Using less electricity in the house, and by
2. Using less fuel in cars.

Why should we save energy?

Energy efficiency

1. Save money: Typical mid-income households spend R 150 to R 200 per month on electricity -- 500 to 800 kilowatt-hours (kWh). Most households could save 20 - 30 % of this easily.
2. Reduce 'Greenhouse Gas' emissions: In South Africa electricity is generated from the coal-burning industries in Gauteng, which produces carbon dioxide (CO2) when burnt. This is contributing to Global Warming, which is potentially catastrophic. Fuel combustion in cars is also responsible for substantial CO2 emissions.
3. Reduce air pollution caused by burning coal to generate electricity, and from car fumes.
4. Save water: Power stations use 2 litres of water for every unit of electricity (kWh) generated.

How does one use less electricity ?

Saving energy in your home

There are several ways to use less electricity with little effort. Some of these are given below:

Your Geyser

Your household geyser uses about 40 % or more of the total electricity consumption.:

Your Lighting

Light energy forms a major part of the total energy consumed in your home. Use 'compact fluorenscent' lights rather than normal incandescent 'bulb' lights for any lights which stay on longer than about 4 hours per day. These are especially good for outside fittings which stay on all night.
Compact fluorescents are bigger than normal bulbs, so some of them don't fit into normal bulkhead-type fittings. Use the 11 or 12W compact fluorescents for this purpose.
Compact fluorescent lights are expensive , but they usually end up costing you half of what you would have paid if you used a normal light bulb, because they last much longer and use much less electricity for the same light output. Each compact fluorescent installed saves about 500 kg of CO2 emissions over its lifetime by using less electricity.

Heating

Heating is generally the third major cause of high energy consumption in your household.
1. Insulate your ceiling. It is estimated that you can save half of your heating electricity bill by doing this.
2. Include 'passive solar' features if you are designing a new house.
3. Install roof hangings. These keep the summer sun out but let the winter sun in.

Energy use and Global Warming

The problem - Change of Climate.

Evidence that the earth is already getting warmer is quite convincing - even to relatively conservative scientists. The planet's temperature is set to rise by 3 to 4 degrees by the year 2100 if current practices continue, which will melt some of the ice caps and cause the sea to rise between 30 and 110 cm - enough to drown out several islands (such as some of the Maldives) and flood some areas in the Netherlands, Bangladesh and Egypt. The Cape Flats and the Fish Hoek - Noordhoek Valley are quite low lying as well and are therefore also vulnerable to this threat. Rainfall patterns are also likely to change, with droughts in some areas and increased rain in others. These planetary changes have potentially catastrophic impacts.

Use of non-renewable energy source: Electricity.

Greenhouse Effect or Global Warming.

The main cause of the problem is energy use. You probably use electric energy throughout the house for cooking, heating, TV and use fuel in cars. You might not realize that generating energy burns huge amounts of coal, which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Petrol use and production also releases much carbon dioxide (CO2).
The result is the 'Greenhouse Effect' or 'Global Warming', which happens when the CO2 (the main greenhouse gas) and other gases (such as methane) get thick enough to form a 'gas blanket' around the earth, causing it to heat up more than usual (see inserted figure). Already 50 % more CO2 is on the atmosphere due to the emissions of the 'modern age'. Now it is not enough to simply stabilize CO2 emissions to stop the greenhouse effect, but rather emissions need to to be reduced by 60 to 80 %. So far, no country is managing anything near this -- although some have stabilized their emissions (such as Denmark).

Generate Your Own Energy.

Solar wind power generator.

Look into the possibility of generating your own energy. You'll need to get planning permission from your council to install a solar panel or micro wind turbine on your property, but once it's working, you can generate a significant amount of clean, green electricity yourself. Not only will your own electricity source give your home a higher grade for its Energy Performance Certificate, but you'll have a great talking point that could also make you money if you come to sell your property later down the line. GENERATE YOUR OWN ENERGY!

Generate Your Own Energy: Micro Wind Turbines

Learn to generate your own electricity, save money today.

It's the latest in green fashion good for the environment and even David Cameron's house is sporting one - a home wind turbine. Amid growing awareness that our fossil fuels are running out, CO2 emissions are rising and so too are our energy bills, more and more people are taking matters into their own hands and installing wind turbines in the home.
There's a compelling environmental argument for generating our own energy. Research from the Energy Saving Trust suggests that micro generation, with enough people backing it, could provide 30% to 40% of the UK's electricity by the middle of the century. WIND TERBINES! would form a large part of this.

Is Wind Right For You?

Wind Generator

Before taking the plunge, you need to decide if installing a wind turbine is the best option for you. It may well be that the wind conditions in your local area do not suit this type of micro generation, and that an alternative option may be more effective.
You can research local wind speeds by contacting the British Wind Association. They may also be able to advise you on suppliers, prices and other things you'll need to take into consideration.
The more energy efficient your home is the better - both for the environment and your property's value. But achieving a truly carbon neutral home can mean making a financial investment in your home through a more ambitious green project. Energy micro-generation solar panels, hydro-electric systems or wind turbines can be expensive to install initially. However there are grants and loans available from your council and government that could help make your green project more affordable. Doing your research into which grants and loans are available for you to TAKE ADVANTAGE! of and how to make an application can really pay off in the long run.

Why Going Green Can Make You Money

Green Electricity

Making your home energy efficient isn't just better for the environment; it might also boost your property's resale value. A key element of Home Information Packs- currently compulsory in England and Wales for people selling homes of three bedrooms or more, but soon to be extended - is an Energy Performance Certificate. This rates a property on its energy efficiency. The more enterprising your GREEN PROJECT!the better rating your property will achieve. This should boost your property's value - and the returns will be even greater if you manage to secure government funding for the work. CHECK AMAZON BOOK STORE FOR MORE INFORMATION!

One of the causes of increasing electric bill and other electric problems, is incorrect wiring. You must check the electric wiring in your home. But if you want to make sure, better hire an electrician. I live in St. Paul. Electricians there are truly trustworthy. You may try to find one here.
