In most people's vocabularies, design means veneer. It's interior decorating. It's the fabric of the curtains of the sofa. But to me, nothing could be further from the meaning of design. Design is the fundamental soul of a human-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product or service.

NIKE has been offering customized sneakers since the late ninties and have recently started producing bags and watches that can be customized by the user. So far most of the changes are purely cosmetic (e.g. you can change colors, but not fit or style). Your best bet if you want pumpkin and pink sneakers.
Timbuk2 - Custom Messanger Bags
Timbuk2 is a San Fransisco based company that produces messanger bags that can be customized with your choice of colors, sizes and accesories.
Freitag - Custom bags
Like Timbuk2, Freitag makes messanger bags and other softgoods. Their products are truly customized, made from tarps that are hung on the side of trucks. The website shows what tarps are available and allows you to choose what section of the tarp you want your bag made from.
