Censorship in the Media in the United States

Professor Carl Jensen founded Project Censored in 1976; it operates within the School of Social Sciences at Sonoma State University.

Project Censored stated mission is to teach journalism students and the public about the roles and responsibilities of the press in a free society. Project Censored identifies, researches and publishes stories it's determined to be of social significance and that it believes to have been under-reported, censored or self-censored by mainstream news media. It then ranks and publishes its top stories in its "The Top 25 News Stories" yearbook.

"censorship refers to the intentional non-inclusion of a news story - or piece of a news story - based on anything other than a desire to tell the truth. Such manipulation can take the form of political pressure (from government officials and powerful individuals), economic pressure (from advertisers and funders), and legal pressure (the threat of lawsuits from deep-pocket individuals, corporations, and institutions)." - www.ProjectCensored.org

Although it declares no official political agenda, Project Censored's reporting is of a decidedly liberal bias. This does not negate the validity of the reporting, left-wing views are to be considered equal to right-wing in a free press society, but rather it shows the need for more reporting of its kind from all political viewpoints.

Censored 2011: The Top 25 Censored Stories of 2009-10

Each year, as it has for the past quarter century, Project Censored lists its list of the top twenty-five censored stories-the major new stories that were ignored or under-reported by a mainstream press too busy covering the latest junk food news story. Stories are presented in depth, and the original reporters are given the opportunity to provide updates and comments on how their stories came about. - Amazon.com
