Psyllium Seed Husks

Although you may not have heard of psyllium husks before, you have probably heard of Metamucil, which is composed primarily of psyllium seed husks.

What It Is, What It Does, and How It Can Help

Psyllium husk is the outer shell of a particular type of seed. It is highly fibrous and is not digested by the body. Once in the body it absorbs water. This is the reason why when taking products with this material in it, it is recommended that you drink a large amount of water at least eight full glasses during the day with one full one at the time you take the product. The result is a bowel movement that while bulkier is actually easier to pass because it is not as dense. This is why it is a favorite of companies that make constipation aids.

Warnings

There are some things to be aware of, if you are planning to use products containing this material over a long period of time. It is usually best to work up to a full dosage in order to avoid things like bloating and gas which can occur as a result of the material entering your gastrointestinal system. If you have had surgery to any part of the intestines it is advisable that you speak with your health care provider before starting on a dietary fiber supplement containing Psyllium seed husks as there are some instances where individuals who have had surgery to this area have suffered blockages caused by the fiber.

If you are taking psyllium, make sure that you're drinking enough water with each dose (at least 12oz every time you take the fiber).

Alternatives to Pure Psyllium

If you do not want to take high dosages like the ones found in constipation aids then you may wish to consider something along the lines of a high fiber cereal there are a number of them, which contain Psyllium husks as the main ingredient constituting the dietary fiber. As with taking the supplement when eating the cereal it is a good idea to drink plenty of water in order to help the fiber do what it can for your body and that is to help in the removal of toxins and waste from your system. Psyllium husks are in fact the primary supply of dietary fiber that is used in majority of constipation aids and high fiber products as well as supplements.

If you are interested in psyllium as part of a cleansing regimen, you best option is to buy a colon cleanser like Almighty Cleanse, as these already contain all the ingredients you need for cleansing, not just psyllium.

Jane,
Nice lens. Too many people overlook the benefits of fiber. How it can help lose weight and clean the intestines. Very good information. Thank you!
