Electronic music of a darker side

Electronic music is one of those genres of music that I enjoy. Specifically I have a preference for psy-trance. I made this lens to point out and talk about this style of music, and some of the artists that I listen to most.

What is psytrance or psychadelic trance?

Psychedelic trance or psytrance is a form of electronic music characterized by hypnotic arrangements of synthetic rhythms and mesmerizing melodies. It first broke out into the mainstream in 1995 as the UK music press began to report on the exploding trend of Goa trance. Since then the genre has diversified immensely and now offers considerable variety in terms of mood, tempo, and style. Some examples include melodic full on, dark ("darkpsy"), progressive, suomi, psybreaks (generally quite rare), and psybient or psychedelic downtempo.

This is only part of the story! If you're interested in learning more there is a lot more at wikipedia

Psytrance has various sub-genres.

Some are pretty interesting.

Psytrance started from Goa-trance. As goa-trance evolved into psytrance, so did psytrance evolve into sub-genres. Here is a list of some of more well known sub-genres.
  • Psybreaks - Psybreaks or psychedelic breakbeat is a form of psychedelic trance originating in the mid 2000s, splicing Breakbeat basslines and rhythms into otherwise heavily Psytrance-influenced tracks.
  • Full On - Full on or melodic psytrance (also referred to as morning trance, club psytrance and Isra-trance) is a style of trance music, a form of psychedelic trance firstly originated in Israel at the early 2000s.
  • Dark Psytrance - Dark psytrance (also called killer psytrance, darkpsy, horrortrance or simply dark) is a darker, faster and more distorted form of psychedelic trance music, with tempo ranges usually from 145 to 165 BPM.

Artists and DJ's worth looking at.

Is one of these my new favorites?

First off a great way to find new artists is to head over to www.di.fm and browse their playlist forums. They list all the songs in a particular session there.

The comments section is a great place to post about artists you know and would like to recommend to others. It's also starting to be a great place to find artists to look up.

I'm only one guy, so any help finding new and exciting artists and songs is a great help. :)

Morlack mixes sessions by the name of Frequency Patterns. You can check him out at www.di.fm usually in either the harddance or goa-psy trance channel. I'm not sure of the times sadly as I cannot find his name on the calender or DJ list. Just search around for his sessions called "Frequency Patterns". He usually mixes those.Morlack's profile at Last.fm.

Fatali has a bunch of awesome songs. I've got one posted in the youtube section below. There are a few more of his songs on youtube so dig them up if you like how his stuff sounds. Fatali has a CD available at www.beatport.com

Yahel His psy-trance songs are some of my favorites. Check out the song 'inta omri' in the youtube section below.

Talamasca. Check out youtube for some of his stuff. I found four of their songs at djtunes.com. Just do a search for Talamasca. The songs I liked the most were "Life Stream" and "Breaking the Matrix (Talamasca mix)".

Cyber Cartel. They have some very spacey trance like songs that I highly enjoy. It creates this atmosphere and feeling of far out worlds; like exploring mysterious and exciting places. Imagine flying through space at the speed of light! I've added some of their songs to the youtube video list below. I very much recommend checking them out.

Goasia This artist creates some very strong and emotionally charged songs . I've posted a couple of their songs in the youtube section below this. They've got a great sound.

Youtube has a lot of great psytrance!

Who would have thought that youtube would be a great music service!

Kat Kovaleff's ethnography for UCSC anthro class: "Documenting Culture." Sound-tracks: Shpongle - Beija Flor Mr. Peculiar - Remote Viewing The words from the scrolling intro: "Within the intricately syncopated pulses and biotically textured vibrations created by ever more complicated methods of sound synthesis, we are honing the art of trance into de-collapsing vistas of organized shamanic sciences and psychosomatic alchemy. To be fully exposed to heartbeat of technological music is to be direct witness to the astounding presence of life and participant in it's aeonic momentum." Listen now - Streaming psytrance

Some sites hosting some great psytrance mixes

I've mentioned a few times how I have a hard time finding the mixes and songs that I want. Some good news is that I have found some of them.
DJ Mixes
Both DeciBelle and PinkPanther are great artists and mixers. They are my preferred on that list.
Final Fantasy Productions
Again, DeciBelle and PinkPanther are featured here. Check out some of the other mixes too.
DI streaming radio
The best place, I think, for listening to great electronic music of all sorts is DI.fm. They have lots of channels that you can tune into whenever you want.
TranceMoon
This was posted in my comments section. Its another good website for streaming psy-trance.

Online music stores to get psytrance and other electronic music.

Often times a lot of good psytrance is hard to find for one reason or another. Its a niche flavor of music I would say. It certainly isn't 'main stream' where it can be found frequently played on TV or radio stations.

Below is a list of places to find some great psytrance. These places often will have samples to listen to so that you know you like it before you buy it.
Beatport
An all encompassing music store dedicated to electronic music. They have stuff from pretty much any category and a very nicely laid out and fluid website to search through the available songs.
Psyshop
This is what its all about! This site is dedicated to all things psy-trance. I've found quite a few songs and artists on this site that I couldn't find anywhere else.
Di.fm's music store
This is the store for the streaming electronic music site www.di.fm. The main site itself is great because of its 'tune in whenever you want' streaming music. Its also a great place to find artists and get to know other people on their forums.
djtunes.com
A recent discovery, this store specializes in digital dance music. They have a great selection spanning 100 pages.
MasterBeat.com
These guys specialize in all sorts of electronic music. You have a wide library to browse through and the ability to search by artist or track title. This is more of a general electronic music site. They seem to be lacking in the psy-trance department. See my review below.
Emusic
A site for independent artists and music. This is one of the best places to find lesser known artists or non 'main stream' music. Its also where I found a song that I couldn't find anywhere else in my searches online. They have a free 25 song signup offer. I say give it a try. The songs are in MP3 format and as far as I know have no DRM nonsense.
Amazon.com
You'd think that Amazon wouldn't have much being the giant multi-product company they are. Well I've found some pretty good things on Amazon. They also offer import CD's which other places may not. They are a bit more expensive though because of their 'import' status.

More psy-trance DJ's and artists!

Some of my prefered DJ's and Artists.

Granddaddy DJ, also known as 3.14, mixes some great sets! I discovered him through di.fm just like Morlack.

You can catch his show at www.di.fm in the goa-psy trance channel Tuesdays usually around 2-4pm US eastern time. His shows are called High Definition Dance Music and The Other Side.

Stella Nutella. I will point you to a song of hers, the one that introduced me to her, called Different Colour. So far the only place I have found it was in a CD compilation called Waldfreakquenz. You can get that at www.psyshop.com.

DJ Shroom. Sadly I cannot find his mixes recorded anywhere so far. It was a great mix of industrial, dark, energetic, organic sounds all mixed together. I'm going to keep an eye out for his mixes from now on.

Mr. Peculiar. His cd Mind Dala is a great cd with some superb psy trance on it. It has a very dark melodic tone to it and all the songs are great. You can check it out at Amazon using the links below or you can check it out here at psyshop.com.

Cosma is an artist I discovered through a tribute set done by DJ Eyal Yankovich. Sadly I learned that Cosma has since passed away. He has created some very powerful songs which are very melodic and moving. I reccomend looking them up at www.beatport.com, or any other place you can find his stuff.

PsyTrance is big in Israel

Psytrance in Israel

The psytrance scene is huge in Israel. A lot of them equate it to a spiritual movement; a spiritual discovery so to speak.

Some of the psytrance events in Israel easily push 10, 20, even 30+ thousand people in attendance.

A lot of famous psytrance artists come from Israel. Infected Mushroom is one such artist.

Watch this short video to get a good idea of what I'm talking about.

POST MILITARY TRIP (P.M.T) - EXCLUSIVE

Post Military Trip : A film directed by Shruti Bhardwaj P.M.T - Dur: 45mins After discovering the tribal musical rhythm of Goa, India, Israeli backpackers found a revolutionary harmony and turned Israel into a Trance Empire. 60,000 Israelis go to India annually after their mandatory service in the army. PMT was released in the Cinemateques in Israel and aired on BBC reaching a global audience of 60 million. A must see revelation of the power of change that is storming towards the old guards of disharmony and disconnection. Never before has the world been exposed to a part of Israel's society in such a revealing manner. Written, Produced and Directed by Shruti Bhardwaj. Through this musical phenomenon, she looks at the Israeli backpackers and at the relationship between east and west. She believes passionately in the power of film to contribute to the global peace dialogue that is emerging in the Middle East.

What can be found around the web?

People post great things on youtube and its kind.

Youtube, and other music sites, are often used as music repositories interestingly enough. Its a great place to find some of the more obscure psy trance songs. Too bad you can't purchase the music off of youtube.

Great Psy-Trance on Amazon

Amazon sells import cd's as well

Believe it or not I have found some great stuff on Amazon. You would think a giant retailer of everything would have a poor selection, but its actually pretty good. They now have a digital download service to get mp3s directly. How cool is that?

Anyways, this is just a small selection that you may enjoy. Feel free to browse around Amazon and see what else is out there.

As far as I know they make their own samples, but also use and manipulate pre made samples. As to how they make them, usually they have various pieces of hardware and software for that. I'm no expert though, just a fan.

I don't know of too many 'free' download sites for psy-trance. I do have this site which I posted in the streaming section above:
    http://finalfantasy-productions.com/english/downloads/downloads.htm

    And also this one: http://www.goa-project.com/dj-mixes.html

If I find more I'll post them. Sometimes music download stores have introductory free download offers. I suggest giving them a try.

I'll say this though, I believe in supporting the artists so I suggest whenever possible buying the songs and cds. I've listed a few good music stores above to check out.

Overall I love electronic music. It is my preferred type of music. But my tastes go beyond that so don't assume I'm a one track person. (more)
