This is the second of two lenses I have produced on Public Speaking. The first is a "How To" lens - which expores my unique approach to Overcome Your Fear of Public Speaking and Write and Deliver an Outstanding Speech.
This lens explores why public speaking is important and what you can do over time to develop that skill and become a truely outstanding speaker. It is not going to happen overnight. It is not going to happen by attending a couple of days training. Developing the skill of public speaking requires regular practice and feedback - but the payback is immense.
Public speaking is the single most powerful tool in self development. By developing your skill as a speaker you become self confident, assertive and a good all round communicator. You learn to excel at "thinking on your feet" and "handling media interviews".
Most importantly you are seen to possess leadership qualities, which is why I particluarly encourage all women in business to master the skill of public speaking - you will never ever regret it. It is the skill to put you on an equal footing with men.
So what you will find here is collection of great resources for anyone wanting to develop their public speaking skills broght to you by the Founder of the Professonal Speakers Association in the UK.

A Speech that Changed History
Why every leader must be a competent Public Speaker
This 20 minute speech as considered by most to be the real start of the leadership contest.
The clear front runner before the speeches was David Davis who was believed to have the support of over 60% of Conservative MP's. But the final decision would be made by a vote by all the party members so this speech was the big chance to secure their support.
All candidates were offered speaking coaching - David Davis decided he did not need it - David Cameron decided he wanted it. When the speeches were over - so were Davis's chances of ever leading the party or the country.
Cameron had inspired, Davis had left members feeling that he was not an election winner.
One speech that has changed history; one speech that should signal to all political and business leaders that the power of oratory is still one of the most important qualities in leadership.

Candidates were progressively eliminated as a result of voting by MP's, resulting in a final election choice between Davis and Cameron by the entire party. Cameron won with 67% of the vote. - Conservative Party Report on David Cameron's Speech

91% thought Cameron had done very well or fairly well
68% thought Davis had done fairly badly or very badly
44% had changed their mind about who should lead the party
Davis had gone from leading contender to third place with 33% believing that he should definitely not be elected leader.
