There is a cycle that goes beyond writing, and that is the cycle of publishing. Writers don't understand that there is publishing, and marketing and promotion and a persona which goes into a book. It needs to be written down and planned out: How many blogs will you do? How much time will you spend writing? What sort of market will this book have? How can I use teh power of teh internet to help my book?
Some of these questions have never changed but teh last one has changed teh face of teh publsihing industry. Not only are the readers more saavy, so are writers.
Writers have learned what works for them. They are involved in the process of not only writing the book but promoting it and adding to the audience even before the book is out. That of course takes time and energy, but it also allows writers the benefits of becoming more knowledgable about the publsihing industry.
In other words they also have become consumers. They were not like this before. They were the writer of a book, and they went to traditional publsihers to get the book publsihed and marketed and publicized. - Great lens! I enjoyed hearing it from your perspective. About the money thing, Stephen King once said that true authors have a goal in mind, and that's to make money. They love writing so much that they want to be paid to do it for the rest of their lives. I agree with that. Keep a goal in mind if you choose to self-publish and don't give up until you accomplish it.

- I know of many authors who self-publish including myself! Even then it takes a lot of time and effort. I took 4 months to write my work and it took 6 months to see light of day - with editing, typesetting and other back-end work. Both the traditional and the new ways of publishing have their pitfalls I guess, unless if one gets lucky hitting a blockbuster! :)

- Interesting...I have seen several people that have self-published and a few that have gone the traditional route. For me, I am not so sure I would buy a self-published book. Just because someone says they want to write a book doesn't mean it's any good.
