Deathmatch Returns to a Browser Near You: Join Quake Live's Open Beta!

Quake Live, or QuakeLive, from id Software, is a new release for the PC, the latest addition to the Quake series of first person shooter games.

The debut of Quake Live marks Id's bold pioneering of a new method of delivering titles completely free over the internet, with the support of an innovative ad revenue system. The game will be installed and run entirely through your normal web browser via a plug-in. It will feature sponsor ads tastefully positioned within its maps, where they do not interfere with the gameplay. The in-game advertising network IGA Worldwide handles the ads for Quake Live. Once again Id is leading the pack. In-game advertising has certainly been done before, for example in other free web based games or the products of companies such as Valve. But not quite like this!

Quake Live has been referred to as an "updated Quake III," but the makeover brings a modern web interface and brand new personality and identity. QL will deliver exciting arena gameplay action which is a whole new ballgame with many new features and improvements. You can still play alone in practice mode, as well as join in the usual rocket blasting, rivalry, and revelry with your friends. In fact, you will make new friends and discover new ways to interact with your buddies, join them in game servers, and compete for the best stats! Quake Live will implement a sophisticated skill tracking and ranking system, complete with intelligent server browsing and skill matched games driven by GaimTheory's "metagame engine."

Quake Live was originally known as "Quake Zero" when Id's plans for the game were announced at the 2007 QuakeCon, a free event hosted in Dallas, Tx. Last year at the thirteenth annual QuakeCon, which took place from July 31 - August 3, 2008, major Quake Live tournaments were held and convention attendees were treated to memberships in the Quake Live beta program. They got to kick it with thousands of others at the BYOC LAN (bring your own computer local network), which is by the way the best and largest in North America. When it was all said and done the players got to see and compare how they all did on QL. Even Fatal1ty was present in the BYOC and played for hours. Some video of the '08 tournament matches is available here on QuakeUnity.com. You can expect more great Quake Live tournaments at this year's QuakeCon, August 13-16, 2009.

After a long closed beta period, Quake Live moved to open beta on February 24, 2009. Anyone is welcome to play and the game is continually improving. The date of an official release is unknown, but is generally believed to be happening around the time of this summer's QuakeCon. Please see the Quake Live website at QuakeLive.com for more information and updates about the game. There you can take a video tour of Quake Live and sign up to play. Or drop by idsoftware.com.

Getting Started

Even if you have never played Quake before or aren't much of a gamer, you can still get into Quake Live. After you download and install the browser plugin needed to play the game, there will be a training game to play while the rest of the necessary files are downloading. You will be battling a computer controlled player (bot) named Crash. During this game the site will gather some information about your level of skill. After you finish warming up and getting a basic walk through, you'll be ready to go. You can hone your skills and explore different maps playing against bots in practice mode, or browse for servers with other players at your skill level.

The Quake Live site has a great game manual members can avail themselves of in addition to the tour of Quake Live. You can also find some beginner's guides here at holysh1t.net.

The site is very sleek. The server browser can be customized to narrow the search for games by fields such as location, game type, game difficulty, and game arena. The site will keep track of your progress and stats, such as your accuracy with various weapons and ratio of wins to losses, so it can continue to match you with the most appropriate servers. You can view your stats and the results of all games you've played right on your profile. It also shows a list of your recent competitors. The site even has a leader board showing the players with the highest rank in fields such as most wins, most awards, time played, and highest accuracy.

You can add other players to your friends list. Your list of online friends is displayed on the right side of the page. You will be able to open chats with your friends. You can receive their messages and be alerted when they come online even while you are in a game. When a friend is playing a game an icon will be displayed by their name in your friends list. Hovering over this icon will tell you more information about the game. You can then join your friends with just a click of the mouse.

Another fun thing about Quake Live is that you have the ability to earn awards for all sorts of different things. There are awards for anything from adding your first friend to playing your first match to a wide variety of feats of skill in game. These badges are displayed on your profile for all to see.

Quake Live has five game modes: Free for All Deathmatch (FFA), Team Deathmatch (TDM), Duel (1v1), Capture the Flag (CTF), and Clan Arena (CA). Most of the actual Quake Live gameplay will be much the same as that of Quake III, but polished up. You can expect improvements of many of the same maps and weapons. For example, within this gamespot.com article there is a comparison of changes in appearance of the map dm17, The Longest Yard, between Quake III and its Quake Live counterpart from the time of the closed beta. Quake Live will feature five new arenas and have over forty in total. It will also incorporate much of the Team Arena expansion pack with added team play features in Quake III: Gold.

You might choose to practice with Quake Live's predecessor Quake III. The skills you build there, such as proper strafing movement and strafe jumping, can give you a good leg up. In my opinion Quake III Arena should still, even more than nine years after its first release, be a staple of any good computer game collection. You can probably snap it up pretty cheaply. In Quake III you can play Capture the Flag (CTF), Free for All Deathmatch (FFA), Team Deathmatch (TDM), and Tournaments (1v1 or Duel), among other things, competing against bots or other players. Quake III was a big hit. In fact, with its simple sophistication it has been considered by many loyalists to be the purest arena for competition. Many professional gamers have trained in it, often with freely available mods such as the Challenge ProMode Arena, aka CPMA. Quake III's community is still going strong, even so long after the game first came out in 1999. There are plenty of mods, maps, gameplay videos, and learning resources to be found online.

Many who enjoyed Quake III will love Quake Live. It is expected to return old players to the game and draw a wide new audience, reinvigorating the Quake community with millions of people.

The strafing system in Quake is nowhere near as good as in Doom. Even though you can strafe in Quake what you are strafing away from is not as visible as in Doom. I'm not saying Quake is bad, I just prefer Doom. Doom has more monsters on screen, it can be way more hectic and unlike Quake it is possible to survive a big battle because of the visible projectiles coming towards you that you can dodge. Quake doesn't seem to have that many monsters that shoot visible projectiles at you so it is harder to strafe and can making survivng pure luck.

Playing Doom on a browser sounds ok, but I would much prefer to play ZDoom which is a fan update of Doom making it more like Hexen with the Hub system and better scripting. It also uses 3dfx so the graphics look a lot better, they are still 'flat' but it looks nice.

Hi. Thanks for your input. Yes, it is a pity. Still, I'm not sure I understand what you mean about dodging, at least if you are referring to Quake. Of course in Quake you strafe & dodge...
I've never really played Doom except very briefly & would like to try it. Have you heard about the new site with Doom 1 that you can also play free in your browser? Somebody recompiled it in Flash 10 from the original source code. It is right there on the page, but I read there is no music. When I tried to play my browser crashed soon after I began, but perhaps that was due to my having quite a few pages open or not having the right Flash plug-in or something. I'll try again when I'm running fewer things. Anyway, the page is at http://www.kongregate.com/games/mike_id/doom-1. See also http://geekadelphia.com/2008/12/30/play-doom-in-your-browser-get-fired-from-work/ etc. GLHF. :) Thx again!

    Hey topicopter,
I used to love Quake 1 and 2, but QIII never held my interest the same as the first ones. Lot's of great info here, so may have to get ready to practice my PC skills again and give it a go.

Great lens even though I am not much of a Quake fan, I much prefer the original Doom and Doom 2 and feel its a pity that they don't go back to making games like that where u could dodge stuff that was shot at you. Now all the FPSs seem to work on the principal of run and gun and we have lost the strafing out of the way of incoming fireballs, etc.
