It is so awesome to hear someone else be mindful of being green, yet not over the top. I feel a lot like this too. Thanks for reminding us that every bit counts and we can all make a difference. *** Blessed by a SquidAngel ***

First of all, thank you for the SquidAngel blessing! And I'm happy to read that you and I are on the same wavelength. Trying to be a better steward of the earth is simply what I'm trying to do. I'll never be perfect, though.

Well, thank you very much. So glad that you've found some useful tips. There's always something new to learn about living a greener life, I think.

Great lens. I practice most of these ideas and just made some lovely calico bags to replace plastic in fruit shops etc. They can be easily washed and reused over and over. *-*Blessed*-* and featured on Sprinkled with Stardust and also on Save Planet Earth and Plastic is Death
  • CherylK Aug 13, 2010 @ 11:40 am | delete
Thank you very much for the angel blessing, Norma. I do appreciate your kindness. Your calico bags sound great...I use reusable bags all the time but those would be pretty, as well. I am making reusable sandwich and snack bags for my kids and grandkids...and for me!

Thank you so much for visiting. I did try to be honest in that I strive to be more eco friendly but am not always successful. Once you form a good habit, though, it becomes second nature and many of these tips have become second nature for me.

I just want to thank everyone who has commented on this lens. I appreciate the feedback and love that we're all on the same page. I'm still learning. I had to chuckle at HorseAndPony's comment about switching to the wine box...I will admit that that's hard for me, too, but Black Box does a good job of it.
  • HorseAndPony Nov 3, 2009 @ 2:20 pm | delete
I am on the same quest. I love going green and this was a great lens. I love your section, Wine Lovers Unite. How funny. We are having a hard time completely switching over to the box. Sometimes we do sometimes we don't. We need to work on that.

  • JenOfChicago Sep 9, 2009 @ 12:40 pm | delete
Great lens - I like how you've set goals for yourself to help yourself be more green.
  • Demaw Jun 6, 2009 @ 7:18 am | delete
I can relate to saving things for "future projects". I had to also get tough with myself and give away bags of yarn and material that I know I will never get to use among the other "future projects" and unfinished projects. Five star lens.
  • TheGreenerMe Jun 3, 2009 @ 7:34 am | delete
I love this lens! One thing I'm trying to do more of that you mentioned is to buy locally. It's tough sometimes to find local produce, but it tastes so much better. Great work, and lensrolled!

Amen sister! That's exactly what it's about- taking small steps! That's what I'm trying to do and what I'm trying to make lenses about so it's so great to see similar attitude and spirit! I noticed that you had a few books on buying local, but not Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Vegetable Miracle. YOU NEED TO READ THIS. It's truly life changing.
  • EverythingMouse Sep 13, 2008 @ 11:08 am | delete
A great lens. It is so true that if we all took small steps then it would make such a big difference.

I agree, the fuel efficiency is one of the toughest parts of "going green" to combat...it's a necessary part of life to travel around, and most of the time it has to be by car. Excelllent work here!

Wonderful way to inspire and hopefully those that visit will take heed for the information you have been so kind to share. People need to be made aware of the carbon footprint and stop having so many children, too. Planet earth just cannot continue to support the massive growth of the population. Young women that are still having 4, 5, 6 children need to realize the great stress this will cause the planet in future generations. It is time for every one to realize that this isn't going away until we control ourselves, our population growth and our consumption habits.
5 stars for a great lens!

Oh Oh Cheryl! Do ya know, I just came from doing a bit of grocery shopping at Publix and got PLASTIC bags. Do ya know that the young man behind me ... the bagger had already said 'paper or plastic' when she quickly followed it up with 'oh, I see you've got your own!' Well, I must say that I was impressed as I turned to look to see. Love your lens and I hope that my quest for a greener life is as productive. ;-)

WOW GREAT LENS! You did an AWESOME job on this lens. Great ideas and I love the way you put it all together.

Did you know that many grocery stores in the UK now charge you as much as 10p (20cents) for each plastic bag to cut down on plastic usage? If only the stores here would do that. I shop for myself, but a meagre trip to Walmart for grocery items only leaves me with about 10 bags! And a lot of stores seem to have done away with their recycling bins too - so you can't bring the bags back.

I always find a use for them though... One novel use is that my girlfriend takes a bunch home with her to England (where of course they cost) and she uses them again and again...

Some very interesting pointers and tips here that I intend to follow up. This is such a well-informed lens. I now live in a country that isn't very well educated on recycling or living green. It's incredibly frustrating but we try to do our bit by not driving and using re-usable bags etc. Perhaps once I learn the language I can start educating. Little by little....

Great lens. Lots of good advise and references. :) You only had your broken pottery and china and wine bottles 7 years before you realized you weren't going to get to making anything anytime soon? Well you're ahead of me! I have "stuff" stashed from 15 or 20 years ago that I'm gonna get to someday.

Guess it's time to clean closets and let somebody have it that can use it.

Greetings! Samhain the cat says a fan stopped by her lens. Sam commends your house-sitter cat clients for acquiring a loyal feeder-person.

This is a great first lens -- I should remember to use lists more often myself! -- and a great cause to be supporting.

I'm lensrolling it on my "Yes, I Love My Hybrid Car" lens. I'm talking about green autos, but we can all help get the word out.

Another simple tip is just to put on lighter or warmer clothes instead of relying on the thermostat. It's amazing how often putting on a sun dress or a snuggly polar fleece sweater makes it unnecessary to run the a/c or heat!

As for your own car, it's pushing it to use current hybrids for hauling -- although my Prius actually holds as much as a station wagon! -- but by the time you're ready to replace your current SUV, there may be a green-alternative SUV capable of doing heavy lifting.
