PURPOSE OF THE GAME
To be the first to reach the line opposite to one's base line.
RULES FOR 2 PLAYERS
When the game starts the fences are placed in their storage area (10 for each player).
Each player places his pawn in the centre of his base line.
A draw will determine who starts first.
Each player in turn, chooses to move his pawn or to put up one of his fences. When he has run out of fences, the player must move his pawn.
The pawns are moved one square at a time, horizontally or vertically, forwards or backwards. The pawns must get around the fences. The fences must be placed between 2 sets of 2 squares. The fences can be used to facilitate the player's progress or to impede that of the opponent, however, an access to the goal line must always be left open.
When two pawns face each other on neighbouring squares which are not separated by a fence, the player whose turn it is can jump the opponent's pawn (and place himself behind him), thus advancing an extra square. If there is a fence behind the said pawn, the player can place his pawn to the left or the right of the other pawn.
END OF GAME
The first player who reaches one of the 9 squares opposite his base line is the winner. Each game takes about 10-20 minutes.

Winning Strategies...
The Reed opening:
This opening consists in placing, during the first two moves of the game, two walls on the third row in front of the opponent with a single gap in the middle. This opening is attributed to Dr. Scott Reed (Edinburgh, UK), a known military strategist and frequent player.
A counter-strategy to the Reed opening is to place two horizontal walls on the third row, one at the extreme left and one at the extreme right, which effectively reduces both players' path counts to one: 1.H34cd H34ab 2.H34fg H34hi
The Shiller Opening:
Players x and o advance their pawns three times each (1.8e 2e 2.7e 3e 3.6e 4e). Then x places one wall vertically at the bottom of x's board (at V89cd, V89de, V89ef, or V89fg), providing two paths for o to win while maintaining just one path for x.
The Shiller opening implements the strategy of maximising the opponent's path count and of minimising one's own path count. Larry Shiller (Wilton, CT) is a known maths educator, software author and consultant, and author of an upcoming book on Quoridor strategy.
