Rune Factory Frontier Crafting Guide

All crafting skills in Rune Factory Frontier use the same method. After buying the first facility available from Lute (who sets up his stall in the town square on holidays, or in front of the church on holidays that happen to be festivals) for each skill, named "Handy Kitchen", "Handy Forge", and so on, they're automatically installed at your house. The crafts table is part of the forge, and is included in its price.

The Handy versions allow you to blend two ingredients. If you have the recipe, sufficient skill, and are carrying all the necessary components in your backpack, just click the button and you're ready to make it. You'll be shown a bar with orangish, green, and blue areas. For a successful result you have to click to stop the slider in the green or blue. If you stop it in the green area you get a level bonus to the item.

You can make items up to 20 skill points above your current level. At 20 points above your level the blue area you're aiming for is very small and there is no green area. The blue and green areas expand as the distance between the required skill, and your skill, narrows. Failure in cooking produces "Flop". Failure in the other crafting systems doesn't use your ingredients, and produces nothing.

Your first equipment upgrade recipe book is a gift from Ganesha, the blacksmith, and your first cookbook is a gift from Rita, the tavernkeeper. Just talk to them a few times to get the randomly-appearing conversation line and receive the gift. Others can be bought from Selphy, who arrives in town during your first week of play and takes up residence in the Rune Archives. As you progress in the game, Selphy will offer better recipe books, but her earlier offerings are always available on Tuesdays. You CAN cook and make things without the recipe books, if you know the necessary ingredients and have sufficient skill to make the item. You'll need to manually select the ingredients to combine if you're working without a recipe.

Buy additional "Handy" kitchen tools from Lute to give you more abilities in your kitchen, such as blending or frying, but space is limited and you won't be able to use all of them until you upgrade. To upgrade, pay Kross to add the needed area to your house. He offers a selection for each area, but the difference is in appearance, not capability. If you're worried about whether you'll like the appearance, just save before you commission him to build it, try one, and reset if you don't care for it.

You can then buy stronger facilities from Lute, which allow you to blend more ingredients. His inventory cycles from week to week, he doesn't bring everything all at once in that little cart. So check back for things you haven't seen yet. He also sells storage boxes for each area. In the case of the kitchen, this is a refrigerator, and it will be offered for sale under "furniture".

The makers he sells don't operate the same way as the crafting skills and don't upgrade. They give you the ability to make seeds from vegetables and flowers, yarn from wool, and cheese and yogurt from milk. Yarn is needed in some gear crafting recipes, and the cheese and yogurt are for cooking recipes. To use them, you hold the item you want to convert and put it in the maker. You can convert stacks of an item at once, provided you are holding the stack.

Potion-making requires wild plants. These can be collected from untilled farming plots, including those in dungeons. Typhoons usually bring a riot of them. As you progress, Lara will offer an improving selection of wild plants for sale. Just talk to her while she's minding the desk at the Infirmary to see her selection.

Forging requires ore, which you can mine from mining rocks in dungeons using your hammer, and other ingredients that are monster drops. Crafting is the same. Some recipes for both call for elemental crystals, which are monster and chest drops, but also can be bought from Ganesha.

Cooking utilizes your produce, and the fruit from the cornucopia trees up the mountain road and around Lake Poli. There are a few things called for that you cannot grow yourself or harvest from monsters. These drop from chests, crates, and vases in dungeons, but can also be bought from Rita when she tends the Tavern at night.

There are a few easy, single ingredient ways to boost your cooking skill. For sashimi, all you need is a fish. Turn everything you can that you catch into sashimi, and not only will your cooking skill benefit, but your wealth will, too. Similarly, the handy blender has several blending recipes that use a single fruit from the cornucopia trees. The chestnuts you can toast in the handy frying pan.

To boost your forging skill, you can apply Scrap Iron to your farming tools. The first time you do this at the appropriate level, it upgrades your tool - but after that you can re-do it endlessly for the skill experience without changing anything. Scrap Iron is free and usually nothing more than a nuisance in your backpack, but can help you here.

Lara's prices are reasonable, and you may find buying lower level energy potions from her then combining them for higher strength potions in your lab is not only a fast skill-level booster, but a great time-saver as well.

Scrap Iron - Any mining rocks in dungeons.

Iron - The first parts of Whale Island and the Green Ruins.

Copper - Early Whale Island and the second half of Green Ruins.

Silver - Lava Ruins, starting on floor 3.

Gold - Lower part of Lava Ruins. Snow Ruins.

Platinum - Snow Ruins, and Whale Island Floating Chambers.

Additional notes:
In dungeons, you'll sometimes see a room that is blocked by dull rocks. These usually contain mining rocks that drop higher quality ore and chests that drop higher quality items than the surrounding parts of the dungeon. Shorter dull rocks require the silver hammer, taller ones the golden hammer.

Mini Golem (Lava Ruins 2F, 3F, Whale Island Flank) has a 10-15% chance each of dropping Scrap Iron, Iron, Copper, or Silver ore.

Cooking Oil - Frequent vase/crate drop in Lava Ruins. Can be bought from Rita as she tends the Tavern or from Danny's Grocery.

Curry Powder - Crate/Vase drop Lava Ruins. Can be bought from Rita at Snowstyle Tavern.

Eggs - Drops from crates on the bottom floor of Green Ruins. Can be harvested from pet Clucky, Duck, and Peck. Sold by Rita when she's tending the Tavern.

Flour - Frequent drop from chests on the Whale's Fin. Sold by Rita at the Tavern.

Garlic - A rarer crate drop, best just to buy it from Rita at Snowstyle Tavern.

Honey - Can be harvested from pet Hornet and Hornet Queen. Can be bought from Rita at the Snowstyle Tavern.

Mayonnaise - Make it yourself in the blender. Takes 1 egg, 1 cooking oil.

Milk - Can be harvested from pet Buffamoo and Buffazoo. Sold by Rita at the Tavern.

Mushroom - Grows wild in untilled farm plots, and can be harvested from pet Big Muck and Tricky Muck.

Orange - Grows from Cornucopia Trees in Summer.

Rice - Frequent drop from chests on the Whale's Fin. Sold by Rita at Snowstyle Tavern.

Yogurt - Make it using the Yogurt maker from Lute. Takes 1 milk.
