Pet Monster Basics
First, you need a barn. If you don't already, see Kross to have him build you one. The cost is minimal, suitable to early in the game. It's also a good idea to grow a patch or two of grass (fodder) and harvest it with the sickle before you tame any monsters, as going hungry reduces their friendship level. It's ready when it resembles tall grass and covers your characters boots. Fodder is stored in the barn when harvested, so don't harvest before you have a barn.
Now you can tame monsters using the Pet Glove. Keep them well-fed in your barn and pet them daily to raise their relationship score. You can also take them for walks to the beach, mountain road, or Town Square, or take them into dungeons, for boosts to their friendship score. This bonus applies once, with the first eligible area you take them to, per monster per day.
As long as you have fodder stored in the barn, they will be fed automatically. When they reach the first friendship level they can be scheduled to work, or you can begin collecting their products using the multipurpose Harvester.
The Harvester comes from Candy, if you don't already have it ask her about Runeys and Rune Wonders and she will give it to you. The Pet Glove comes from Kross, talk to him after you've visited Whale Island for the first time to receive it.
To schedule a monster to work, go up to it in your barn and click on it, and choose the available job. It will be scheduled to start the following day. Producers and mounts do not need to be set to work.
As your friendship with the monsters increases, their work will improve. In the case of producers, this means more and better products. The workers get more done.
To get very specific, producers of milk, eggs, honey, and wool will give you products the level of their FP. Producers of everything else give increasing numbers of the product matching their FP. So a Gobble Box with 3 fp would give 3 gems, and a Wooly at 3 fp would give one level 3 wool.
The Monster's Work Schedule is posted outside your barn, and reads as follows:
Farm Work Schedule
7am: Gather edible plants
11am: Harvest crops
3pm: Water plants
7pm: Gather lumber
10pm: Clear out rocks
1am: Mow grass
This work will still be done even when you're not there or have gone to bed.
