A basic guide to RIT and the surrounding area

The Rochester, NY page received a handful of visits from new RIT students looking for information to help them in getting settled. Given that I went there and know the area, I figured I'd put together a simple page on the surrounding area, housing options, etc.

The Basics

The Rochester Institute Technology is located in Henrietta, which is one of Rochester's larger suburbs. The college itself is on a fairly large piece of land, which has enabled significant growth over the past couple decades. Currently, Park Point--which is basically a small college town--is under construction.

The school itself is rigorous as it operates under the quarter system. The quarter system consists of three ten week quarters, plus a week for finals. The fourth "quarter" is the Summer, should you choose to attend classes (or co-op) then. RIT's eight colleges provide significant support, and they also offer a smaller community within the institute.

RIT has moved toward a more entrepreneurial focus. The entrepreneurship minor brings technical and business students together. The new Albert J. Simone Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship illustrates RIT's focus on this area. That provides you with a brief overview.

In terms of on-campus entertainment, RIT recently built the Gordon Field House which has allowed them to host larger events. Additionally, RIT's division I hockey team regularly plays to capacity crowds. Java Wally's is another popular campus spot, and Park Point is sure to be a focal point once it's complete.

The area around RIT

RIT is on Jefferson Road, which is a major commercial stretch that consists largely of chain stores and restaurants. Despite this, some can feel a little isolated without a car because Jefferson's not the most walkable road. That's the purpose of Park Point, while RIT has also added coffee shops and additional restaurants on campus in recent years.

The Marketplace Mall is about a mile from campus, and it has over 140 stores. There are several strip plazas down Jefferson and intersecting roads, such as Southtown Plaza.

Roc Wiki can give you a good overview of the area's food options. Buffalo Wild Wings, MacGregor's, and J.B. Quimby's are three traditional bar/restaurant favorites. China Gate is a popular Chinese restaurant that also offers delivery, while Tandoor offers Indian food. Both are about a quarter mile from campus. While a little more of a hike, the King and I is a popular destination for Thai.

DiBella's, Amiel's, and Pickle Nick's are three popular sub shops that are less than a mile from campus. The Pita Pit is another popular destination, although it's a little further down Jefferson. Jay's Diner, a 24 hour diner that's located across from the inexpensive second-run theater Movies 10, is another popular destination for students.

Of course, Rochester is about ten minutes away, and East Avenue provides coffee shop and bar options, while Park Avenue and Monroe Avenue offer numerous independent restaurants. The Eastview Mall, which is several miles east down Jefferson, is the area's most high-end mall.

Housing Options

If you're a freshman from out-of-town, you're required to live in the dorms in your first year. RIT has a number of on-campus apartment options after that, while sophomores and graduate students may live off-campus.

In terms of off-campus apartments, Rustic Village is a popular one. In fact, RIT offers busing to and from the apartment complex. However, there are a wide variety of options in Henrietta, Brighton, and the city. You can read reviews on this site.

For those that don't mind a bit of a commute (~15 minutes), Park Avenue is a popular spot among college students and twenty-somethings. There are more home rentals available there than apartments. Finally, there are a variety of apartment complexes and homes available for rent around the University of Rochester on Elmwood and Mt. Hope.
