Hey GonnaFly, could you give me some advice? How do you get your lenses to be successful? Can you give me some celebrity endorsement (Mention some of my lenses, help me build an audience)? I have a great composting lens (excellent for gardening). I'm just a kid and it would be nice to have some help from a true master of the lens! It would be much appreciated!

You have some very informative information. I have been thinking about starting a small vegetable garden. This is very helpful.

Be sure to build the beds a manageable size. If you can't reach across it from either side, you'll get frustrated quickly. 3-4 feet is usually plenty.

Raised vegetable gardens make sent to use especially if you have a rocky soil or critters walking around.

I'm using containers and raised beds exclusively for the first time this year, as we've moved to a spot with a large, lovely yard... and lousy, heavy, gopher infested soil. Some new challenges... but I'm also finding that I really love tending my raised bed!

Great lens, very informative! I have a small raised bed herb garden in which I grow parsley and mint. It's great because in the summer the garden grows outside and then can be moved indoors in the winter where the plants can continue to grow.

Thank you for the nice lens! I've tried free form raised beds and they do tend to come apart quickly, especially in an area that has heavy rainstorms. My next experiment will be natural wood. I just like the look. Thank you.

Last year was the first time I have gardened in a raised bed, and it was great! I highly recommend it! My garden bed is in a community garden which provided the beds, mulch and soil. I can't wait to start planting again. Thanks for this awesome lens :)
  • handyone Feb 13, 2012 @ 5:28 pm | delete
Wow, what a great lens. I organic garden. To start one I put clean (no wax or tape) cardboard right over the grass and put half top soil and half cattle manure compost to fill it up. Cover with clean straw and border it with 2x8 spruce. The first year, grow tomatoes. You probably won't need to water at all! You will be amazed. Each year after I add 6 bags of cattle manure compost to feed the worms. The worms feed the plants. The grass and cardboard are gone after the first year. Last year, year 3, I grew a cherry tomato plant that was 8 feet high and wide! Over 1000 tomatoes. It amazed me!

Wonderful lens. I love all of the different ideas of how to build the raised beds. I have used railroad ties and 2 x 6 boards. I made them small enough that I could lean over from all four sides to work on, that makes things a little easier. Thanks for putting so much effort into them. Blessed. Bear hugs, Frankster

Great lens. My neighbor raises vegetables and flowers in very attractive layouts in the back yard. She produces some impressive amounts of vegetables and flowers.
  • Sylvestermouse Aug 15, 2011 @ 9:21 am | delete
Fabulous information and advice. I actually simply prefer the looks of raised beds for plants or flowers. Also, I find that my dogs are just not as likely to step into them as they are to run over plants at ground level. Blessed

very nice, lots of good info. You are very right about the increased water use in the desert; Besides which I've discovered that the wood will wick the moisture right out of the soil if it's not sealed. Another advantage of a raised bed, though is to keep small children on the path, especially is the space is really tight.

This is something I am seriously considering. I've been wanting to put in a garden for several years, we have lots of room, but are on sand, so have to bring in good soil. And with my health issues, I think I could keep it more manageable for me with a raised garden. Great information here, thank you and loved the design and layout! - Kathy

Love it - because it affirms my passion for simplifying gardening. Just wish to add that nutrition for raised and potted gardens is crucial. Use quality organic soil enhancers like fish and kelp extracts. Chemicals are not ideal because they kill the organisms that promote growth and help plants flourish for a great harvest.
  • Ecomum Apr 30, 2010 @ 12:34 pm | delete
I just wish now I have got a space for something like that as I love gardening but live in flat on 8th floor. There is no sun at all, would you still think that I will be able to harvest anything in shade or is it not worth it? Great lens.

Great information. I am in a community garden and this is what we do. Our plots are 4 ft X 12 ft.
I am able to grow as much as I need. Last season I experimented with SQ ft gardening. It was ok, but I need to refine it a bit. It is a great way to increase your yield. A five * job :)

Very nice lens. I'd like to reiterate the warning about using railroad ties for a border. My uncle just died of cancer and one of the suspected causes was chemical poisoning from railroad ties in his family's vegetable garden. He grew up in Guam, and that was how they contained their garden. No one knew back then. His parents and younger sister also died from cancer. Blessed by a Squid Angel.

Excellent lens. It is possible to get some treated timber that's fine for organic gardening. I can't remember what the treatment agent is, but my girlfriend has treated oak in her organic garden and she's *very* particular about this type of thing. In general though, I agree, treated timber is out!
  • AppalachianCountry Sep 10, 2009 @ 8:23 am | delete
Awesome lens. The best part about this type of gardening is being able to control the soil.
    Wonderful images, also. 5 stars*****

Really good job! You obviously know what you are talking about. It's always nice to listen to an experienced voice. I love giving you a 5 on this one. I'm going to lensroll it to my Frost-bitten tomatoes lens, since they are also in raised beds. I just concentrate on the tomatoes more than the raised beds. About those gophers -- they are a terrible problem here. I have to put wire mesh at the bottom of all raised beds and if I don't have enough room there, I have to use containers or put gopher cages in the ground.
  • dustytoes Jul 20, 2009 @ 5:46 pm | delete
Great ideas. I also love the photos of the different types of beds, but mine is the free form, mounded dirt type!

You have some wonderful garden lenses. I just favorited this one. I use raised beds too and they are my favorite. I have two right now 2' x 22' each. We made them out of (2x8's) untreated wood - knowing we'd have to replace the wood in a few years. But I wasn't comfortable using treated lumber. For soil I used a combination of Black Kow and compost from our backyard compost pile. Composting is one of the most interesting things about gardening. Those who don't are really missing out. 5*'s!
