Raising Bookworms
Ranked #5,890 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #207,113 overall
Getting Kids Reading for Pleasure and Empowerment is what Raising Bookworms is all about...
As a professional educator, children's book author and editor, this is the question I hear most often-a near-constant lament at virtually every public appearance, speaking engagement, book signing, or school program I do. In fact, according to a recent survey by Scholastic, eighty-two percent of parents say they wish their child would read more books for fun. And I understand, because as a parent, I've felt this way myself, and I'm guessing that most likely you have, too.

- I've found that the best way to get my niece to read more is by getting her educational magazines that are aimed at kids. She loves to get mail and looks forward to receiving them every month. That's usually what I get her now for her birthday.

- I haven't read the book but I was lucky enough that after reading with mom for years, my daughter now gets excited about going to the book store to find the latest book in her favourite series (and she likes lots of different series).

- I haven't read the book, but, yes, it's important to get your kids reading early. The best way is to read to them regularly -- bedtime stories are a great way to do that. Picture books when they are younger--so you can relate the pictures to the words and the story... and then later, using the words to "paint a picture" for the kids' imagination. We did that when we homeschooled our two kids (for 13 years!) ... Nice lens. I've favorited, liked, thumbs-upped, and lensrolled your lens! Congrats on a great job!

"The book is filled with words of wisdom and inspiration, but the practical tips will help parents ensure that their children not only can read but love to read. The tables at the end offer a tidy matrix of activities that will reinforce reading efforts."
