The Real Thailand, Northern Thailand

The Photo you see on the left is "Ning" Miss Thailand Finalist in 2006 I think! What a beauty and of course from Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. A lovely girl who has such natural beauty she beat allcomers. Now retired from beauty paegeants to give others a chance.

So many people get the wrong idea about Thailand. They seem to think it is only girlie bars and all that mucky stuff.

When really Thailand is like any other country when you get down and simple with the natives.

Northern Thailand is landlocked so if, you only want beaches then you need to head south to the Islands which, are beautiful but need to be visited for their own merits.

Anyone visiting, with a preference for the cultural aspects of Thailand must visit Northern Thailand.

The temples are a must. The food is different in the North and has to be tasted to be believed.

Visitors to the North will be able to experience craft making of specific items as diverse as Real Silver jewellery to Packaging Products made from Raa Paper, Exquisite!

Thailand is the land of smiles

You will no doubt have heard this said of Thailand and it is; by and large true, I say this with tongue in cheek because the Thais are a genuinely friendly people but you have to bear in mind their circumstances.

Whilst they are a hard working race they get no help from their government. If they have not got, or cannot find work, then they do not eat.

It follows therefore that if they get their hands on a foreign traveller with money they are gonna smile and make sure they do everything possible to keep them happy, while at the same time hoping to receive some of their money.

Should you be going to travel in Thailand please enjoy all it has to offer and believe me that is an awful amount but temper it with consideration for the local population

The King and the Royal Family are the most respected institution in the kingdom and they are loved and respected by all their loyal subjects.

Make derogatory remarks about any member of the Royal Family at your peril.

The second most important institution is the Monkhood of the Buddhist faith, ninety per cent of the population follows Buddhism.

Full of beautiful and ancient temples lavished with much adornment by the community it serves. There are more than 7000 Buddhist temples in Thailand.

The wealth of the monkhood in Thailand is probably greater than the monarchy. Every Thai individual will make "merit" by giving to the monkhood at any opportunity. The theory being that they will get it back in the next world.

The Thais are devout Buddhists in the main with Muslims making up 10% of the population mainly in the Deep South and Christians and other religions making up the remainder.

It must be born in mind that Thai style Buddhism is a mish mash of true Buddhism and paganism, which has filtered down from the days of the Lanna kingdom.

Most Thais have their own spirit house in the garden for the spirits of the ancestors to reside in and offerings will be made to keep the spirits happy.

The temple is the hub of village and community life. Local government whilst centred in the Ampher House (town hall) gets its message across in the local temple.

This is the same when election time comes around, it all centres on the temple.

Every family expects their sons to join the monkhood in their teens and consider it a great honour for the family.

Great ceremony is placed on the son joining the monkhood followed inevitably by a great party to which everyone is invited.

The Thai way is to have a party for any reason however slight and I for one have no problem with that.

Weddings are another great opportunity for a party.

The day starts with members of the family going to the temple and collecting the community owned tables and chairs in their trucks and setting them up in the grounds of the brides family home.

The previous evening the fatted pig would have been killed and cut into mouth sized portions and cooked in the largest Wok you have ever seen some five feet in diameter.

It is monitored throughout the night to ensure it gets stirred occasionally, in between the rounds of rice whisky drinking.

The night before is rather like a disco with a group on stage and everybody dancing.

The men dance together and not with the ladies. It is most disconcerting to have a Thai male come up to you and ask you to dance.

You might find it very strange to dance with men but, it is difficult to say no without causing offence and so you may well end up dancing with them.

The men seem to be happy and the ladies accept it.

Ask anyone you know who has visited Thailand whether they would return, I am confident you will be very hard put to find anyone who would not return.

Other Things To Try In Northern Thailand

Food Delights

The food in Thailand is beyond belief when eaten in the thai home cooked by a true thai cook.

It is totally different to anything you will find in a thai restaurant outside Thailand itself.

Full of natural herbs and spices literally taken off the trees or bushes.

I for one did not realise that chilli peppers grew on a bush! They start off very small and green and if, left alone to mature will progress from green through to bright red. In between they can be yellow or orange. It seems the nearer they are to green the hotter they are.

Unlike Indian cuisine true thai food seems to a taste of its own somewhere between Indian and Chinese food.

The thais have a very sweet tooth. So for anyone who likes it sweet and sticky you can't go wrong.

The best experience is to sit at the side of the road in the local town and eat as the traffic goes past. It is so cheap it beggars belief.

You really need to try it and experience it for yourself. I recommend heartily!

The Beauty Of Thai Women.

The question is how do you define The Beauty Of Thai Women?

What is it that makes them special?

What is it that makes them different to the average Western woman?

The beauty Of Thai Women is legendary in that they are primarily visually beautiful but, much more importantly, they are caring and considerate.

Their #1 priority is that their "man" should be content. Also the convention of age does not figure in the equation.

The Beauty Of Thai Women is their natural instinct to be beautiful.

Notwithstanding their natural beauty it would not occur to them to undertake the simplest of excursions away from the house without first ensuring their outward appearance was as good as they could make it.

The mere touch, of a Thai woman is akin to a butterfly settling on you. A silky touch which alone engenders a feeling of well being. Traditional Thai massage performed by a Thai woman is a sensual experience not to be missed.

The Beauty Of Thai Women is their natural desire to place themselves completely in thrall to their "man".

In return they expect their "man" to respect them, something the average Thai man is not capable of.

This is the main reason so many beautiful Thai Women turn to the western man.

They don't feel the need to be constantly going out or being taken out. They are quite happy to stay at home to cook and clean for their man and please him in whatever way possible.

Other beautiful qualities of Thai Women is their natural delicacy of bone structure and size. Most Thai women are less than 5'2" tall and their natural gait is a joy to behold.

These qualities are what make The Beauty Of Thai Women in any relationship an unforgettable and meaningful union of East and West

Northern Thailand Travel Experiences.

Chiang Mai To Myanmar

Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand and is considered the capital of the North. Gilded Chedis and ornate temples abound.

The ambience is very pleasing and the pace of life is slow, to say the least.

This cannot be said of the markets however, the pace here is more frenetic.
Should you be looking for crafts produced in the region you only need to visit the famous Night Bazaar to find all manner of goods displayed at very reasonable prices.

If, it is possible, for you take a local Thai resident with you when shopping, you will get a much more satisfying price. There is without question a two tier price stucture one for the locals and one for the visitors.

All of the goods on display at the Night Bazaar will have been manufactured in the local villages around Chiang Mai. The handicraft villages such as BORSANG and BAAN TAWAI represent excellent value, on their own but, if time is a limiting factor then the Night Bazaar showcases all of the craft items available in the area.

Also to be found in the area of the Night Bazaar are an abundance of bars and restaurants where you may quench your thirst and rest your feet. All of them are reasonably priced and offer entertainment, making Chiang Mai one of Asia's most appealing tourist destinations.

Some distance out of the city on the way to Doi Suthep you will find the Chiang Mai zoo. A popular day trip from Chiang Mai nestled among forest and spectacular waterfalls. Feeding the alligators is always a popular spectacle but, throughout the zoo you can see all sorts of species of mammals, reptiles and birds all in natural settings.

It is quite exhausting to walk around the zoo ,if you want to see everything but, they do have mini buses that you can jump on to get from point to point at a small cost.

Since my last visit to Chiang Mai zoo, some three years ago, I am pleased to report that they have installed a super mono-rail train system which whisks you quickly and scenically around the zoo from point of interest to point of interest. This method of travel much reduces the exhaustion factor and is greatly recommended.

Chiang Mai offers many hotels, from budget through to the luxurious Sheraton Chiang Mai.

Something worth remembering is that the majority of hotels have a daily room rate and also a monthly rate. Should you be staying more than two weeks in the city it is definitely worth ascertaing the daily rate first. Having been offered the daily rate, enquire the monthly rate.

At a hotel with a daily rate of 650baht, this represents a monthly rate of 20,000baht. You will be pleasantly surprised to find that the monthly rate will be somewhere around 7-8000baht.

This results in a saving of 12000-13000baht against the daily rate. Any period longer than two weeks will mean that any extra days will in essence be free.
The only difference in service is that sheets will only be changed once or twice a week and the same goes for chambermaid cleaning of the room. A small sacrifice I would suggest.

South of Chiang Mai is Lamphun, home to the Northern Thailand Trading Estate which provides jobs in many Multi-National companies who's names would be instantly recognisable to most visitors. Lamphun, also has its own moat and several historic temples. Lamphun is the original capital city of the ancient Haripunchai kingdom.

Farther south along highway eleven lies Lampang, another town that attracts tourists to its important temples.

None more so than the temple at Kho Ka near Hang Chat. Its claim to fame is that it was the original home of the Emerald Buddha. The Buddha was purloined by the early monarchs and now resides in the Grand Palace in Krung Thep (Bangkok to you and I).

Marks from the weapons of the time can visibly be seen in the stonework surrounding the Chedi and great play is made of the battle that took place. The original wooden temple exists to this day and is visited with great reverence by the faithful.

Another city well deserving of a visit is Chiang Rai. You will need to drive north from Chiang Mai and you will eventually come across the distinguished peak of Chiang Dao - another sustantial peak possessing a fabulous complex of caves underneath it.

Further north, you can leave the main route and travel through mountain passes to Doi Angkhang - one of the last true wildernesses in Thailand before the hills of Myanmar stretch out before you.

Another popular choice is to continue on to Tha Ton, here you can board an overnight raft trip to the older Northern Thai city of Chiang Rai. Much quieter and older than Chiang Mai but, beautifully kept and presented.

By the Southern route you will leave Lampang heading for the hills towards another pretty city Phayao, via Ngao, which lies at the foot of the hills which need to be traversed. I can testify from personal experience that it is very exhilarating to travel this route by coach. The drivers seem not to accept that others may use the road. Certainly anyone else on the route stays well out of their way.

You will know when you are reaching Phayao by virtue of the huge expanse of water on your left. There is a temple nestled at the edge of the lake which must rate as one of the most peaceful places on this earth.

Past Phayao the main road swings North and eventually you enter Chiang Rai from the South. Further North some 30 kilometres lies Mae Sai whose claim to fame is to be the Northern most point in Thailand. The so called Freedom Bridge marks the border between Thailand and Myanmar.

I personally don't imagine the locals of Myanmar consider it as a freedom bridge since the Military Junta keeps them firmly in Myanmar.

To cross into Myanmar however, is certainly an experience not to be missed. Immiediately across the bridge is a market which is a hotbed of contraband of all hues.

Hi! Big Mac,
In answer to your question I am not aware of a particular name for the Thai style of dancing.
It is very much a regional thing with each dance having a particular name. For instance the fingernail dance is the one we most often associate with Thailand especially Northern Thailand.
Other dances are called the Temple dance and the Candle dance.
The most common to us is probably the Fingernail dance. Where the girls wear elongated gold fingernails. Very graceful it is too!
Although at this time I cannot give you a definite name sor the style of dancing I will be seeing a friend of mine in the near future who may know the definitive answer so, if you can curb your frustration a little longer I will try to get you an answer.

First please excuse the delay in replying. Computer problems!
It is possible to get a visa on arrival in Thailand but it will only be valid for thirty days. You can renew by leaving the kingdom and return the same day which will give you a further 15 days.
If you wish to stay longer I suggest you download the visa information on the website of The Royal Thai Consulate in the Phillipines. you can apply for a one year category "O" multiple entry visa. This will require you to renew every 90 days.
If you are buying a property in Thailand you must be aware that as an "alien" you cannot own land in Thailand unless you or your partner are Thai national. My advice is to consult a Thai Lawyer before entering into any property negotiation.
You can however buy a condominion apartment and own it. There will however be services charges to pay annually. You will not own the land it stands on!
Hope this helps REGARDS[in reply to mayllen

Real Thai customs and foods can be obtained from these books but, for the Real McCoy you need to eat in a Thai House.

If you contact me I would feel priveleged for you and your loved ones to come stay in my house in Northern Thailand.

I live in a tiny village where life moves at a very slow pace. Its not the biggest house in the world but we do have air-con and hot water also it is solid and was built by my wifes brother so it would have to be good otherwise I might beat him about the head.

From the village you could easily visit The Official Thai Elephant Consrevation Centre and Hospital. Here they house and treat sick and injured elephants that have been abandoned by their owners once their working usefulness has ended.

Well there you have it. Please come visit I will arrange your itinery if you prefer but, if like me you want to do your own thing I can arrange transport for you at rates far less than the usual car hire companies. If you need to be picked up on arrival that can also be arranged.
