Put Your Old Cell Phone to Good Use

If you have an old cell phone lying around, please don't toss it in the trash.  Cell phones contain toxic material such as lead and arsenic.

There are many good ways to dispose of an unwanted cell phone.  You can sell it to one of several companies if you are strapped cash or if you are in need of a tax write off you can donate it to charity.

I decided to put this lens up in hopes of sparking a donation surge to the charity Cell Phones for Soldiers.  The charity should be near and dear to everyone's heart.

Please consider donating your cell phone, especially with the holiday season around the corner.  But don't wait for a holiday, any time is a good time to donate.

Where To Donate

Just about every charity will accept a cell phone donation

As a veteran, military charities are always near and dear to my heart. However there are many other worthy charities that can put your old cell phone to good use.

Many women's abuse centers give their clients old cell phones because the 9-1-1 option usually will still work even if the account is inactive.

Other charities will sell the donated phones to raise much needed cash. Many people donate food and toys to their local Humane Society, which is absolutely wonderful, but it still takes cold hard cash to pay the utility bills. So please don't hold it against charities when they sell the items you donate.

Call your favorite charity and ask them if they could use the donation.

Why it is Important to Recycle Your Old Cell Phones

Besides being useful to your favorite charity, recycling old cell phones helps by not harming the environment.

Cell phones contain various toxic materials and anything we can do to keep those materials out of landfills will help the world as a whole.

It is estimated over 100 million cell phones will be retired this year. Most of them will be relegated to a desk drawer but too many of them will simply be tossed in the garbage.

The Secret Life Series is a video series about what happens to items when we throw them in the trash. The video series will be released soon.

The average cell phone is only used for 18 months of service by the original owner. It is easy to see how fast the stockpile of unused cell phones will build. Please do your part and dispose of your old cell phone in a proper manner.
