Reuse, Recycle, Reclaim
Before we are born we're given gifts and this carries on throughout our lives. We throw things away, we break things, we send them to charity shops.
Of course it's necessary to occasionally de-clutter our lives- we wouldn't be able to move if we kept everything. However amazing treasures can be found for use in arts and craft projects.
I aim to show you how I've used found and recycled objects and materials in my artwork and to inspire you to think beyond the label of "junk".
Reuse, Recycle, Reclaim is a Textiles book that will soon be available from
Rachel's Melted Fabrics.

Using Offcuts of Textiles
Recycling Melted Fabrics style!

This is a piece I made by patchworking together sections of excess textiles that I cut from the edge of other textiles pieces.
These tiny pieces are like little treasures so it seemed a shame to throw them away.
In my Recycling book I'll show you how to reuse little bits of textiles.
Recycling Dolls
Recycling Melted Fabrics style!

In this textiles piece I've recycled a cheap Star Trek action figure by wrapping it with fabric and yarn.
This piece is called "The Seamstress" and also features recycled fabrics and thread spools.

Recycling Furniture
Recycling Melted Fabrics style!

This textiles piece was made to cover a really old chair.
I copied images of my family onto pieces of fabric and added them into the textiles.
The finished chair will feature in my recycling book.
Recycled Bags
Recycling Melted Fabrics style!

This purse features recycled fabrics, found marbles, and a recycled purse frame.
I'll show you how to make your own recycled bags.
Bras!
Recycling Melted Fabrics style!

Is this going too far?
I decided to make art from my old bras!
The lace looks fabulous when it's melted.

Recycling Old Projects (And Barbie Dolls)
The Sad Demise of Sun

A chapter in my Recycling Book is going to be devoted to recycling old projects- you know the ones- you're totally embarrassed by them- you hide them away in a cupboard or chuck them out! Well I'm going to show you how you can use them for parts. Think of them as your exploration into how not to make your finished item.
Above is The Sun. You can find out more about her and my other Tarot Art Dolls on my Tarot Art Dolls Lens.
Her head fell off and cracked:

And she wasn't as "splendiferous" as I had hoped. So I decided to take her apart and start again.
The New Sun
The Sun Doll- Work in Progress

My partner thinks this doll is starting to look like a Resident Evil boss!
I've had this doll hanging around for a while, wondering what to do with her so I thought I'd experiment with using her to make an altered art doll.
I've taken the original Sun's hairpiece and weaved the Barbie's (or Cindy- she might be a Cindy?) hair into it. I'd wrapped fabric around my old Sun Doll's head because the hair didn't look right on her head but I'm really pleased by the woven bits here.
I've taken Barbie's legs off so that I can set her more easily into the "skirt structure". No sense wasting good legs when they can be used for another project). The textiles for the skirt (you can see it in the background) has been reworked and layered up with other bits to make it prettier and a bigger piece of fabric.
Come back soon to see how she progresses!

- Some really cool ideas for recycling! If you find you can't use all your textiles or you've simply got too much stuff in general, consider using a professional skip hire company to take away and ethically recycle everything for you.
