You don't have to be an "old woman" to enjoy this book.
The purple and red attire worn by Red Hatters is based on the poem, Warning by Jenny Joseph. Most of the hats in this book were created to wear for special occasions and social functions by members of Red Hat Society chapters around the country and around the world. Each hat embodies the spirit of the society as well as that of its creator.
From thrift store hats to lamp shades, each hat is carefully crafted and lovingly decorated using flowers, feathers, ribbon, rhinestones, artificial fruit, red and purple fringe, and just about any embellishment you can imagine. Each hat in the book is featured with its owner and its description, revealing the owners' amazing and varied personalities, all having in common the organization's goals of kindling friendships and rediscovering the value of play.
The book also contains a bit of hat history and hat trivia that is not to be missed by any lover of hats, red or otherwise.
You've gotta admire these women with hattitude!

Women over 50 seem to have gotten over the whole caring about what other people think about them phase of life. If wearing a red hat makes them happy, that's what they're going to do! Kudos to all red hat wearers!

What a relief to be able to wear just what you like and not be a slave to fashion.

What is the Red Hat Society?
A little background, courtesy of Wikipedia.
The Red Hat Society (RHS) is a social organization founded in 1998 for women approaching the age of 50 and beyond. As of July 2009, there are nearly 900,000 registered members and almost 24,000 chapters in the United States and 25 other countries. The Red Hat Society is the largest women's social group in the world.
Red, Purple, Pink? Who wears what?
Members who have not reached that special age of 50 must wear pink hats and lavender outfits.
A full-fledged over-fifty member is expected to wear a red hat with purple attire to Red Hat Society chapter meetings and special events.
If it's her birthday month, a member may wear a purple hat, and word has it that since 2008 is the 10th anniversary of the Red Hat Society, purple hats may be worn all year long.
