How Can I Help?

My goal is to help business people to gain more word-of-mouth business by connecting with others.  The question, "How can I help?" is an intregal part of the relationship development.

Why Give Two?

Old Sales Training Stinks

Somewhere along the line, a sales trainer decided that instead of giving one business card to an unsuspecting target, that instead two would be better. Let me give my opinion why it is not better and in fact is a negative.

Most cards are given out when you meet someone for the first time. Handing a new business acquaintance two cards alludes to the fact that one's for them and the other is to be given to someone they want to refer to you or tell about you.

THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW YOU YET.

Why would you expect someone who has just met you to refer you to a friend? And by the way, you don't know this person's reputation either. Perhaps they are not the best advocate for you.

When you meet someone new, ask for their card first (if you want to get back to them in the future). Then and only then, give them your card when they ask for it. Not two, just one. This gives both of you time to get to know each other before you start thinking about trading business. A much better route.
