Effective Natural Remedies for ADHD Children

ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is diagnosed commonly in the United States. Recent changes from the American Academy of Pediatrics allow for the diagnosis of ADHD in children as young as 4 years old. Previous guidelines focused on children 6 years and up. Various natural remedies for ADHD children are available along with more traditional prescription drug treatments. It is thought that anywhere from 3 to 5 percent of school age children worldwide exhibit at least some symptoms of ADHD. There is no one single cause of ADHD, but it is thought that genetics, diet, environment and various medical conditions can contribute to the condition. Symptoms include inattention, hyperactivity, trouble listening or focusing on tasks, forgetfulness and aggressive behavior. Boys are about three times more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than girls. A decrease in symptoms can occur with prescription medications, behavior modification therapies, natural remedies, dietary changes or a combination of approaches. Traditional prescription medications have been successful in alleviating symptoms at least over the short term but many parents are concerned with the numerous and serious side effects these drugs can sometimes cause. Drugs are often prescribed with the intent to discontinue treatment as ADHD symptoms abate in early adulthood. Recent studies have found, however, that more and more adults in their 20's and 30's are taking ADHD drugs that were initially prescribed in childhood. As yet, the long-term effects of these drugs are just not fully known.

Some people who have tried various natural remedies for ADHD have reported a decrease in symptoms. Each child, (or adult with ADHD), is unique and there is probably a treatment, program or medication, or combination that will work best for each individual.

More Adults Taking Hyperactivity Drugs First Prescribed in Childhood

An article in Britain's online Telegraph reports that a record number of adults are taking prescription medications designed to treat hyperactivity in children. In Britain, total prescriptions for ADHD treatments have tripled in eight years, to more than 600,000. One-third of those prescriptions are being given to adults. Many of these adults have been taking these prescription drugs for years, even decades.

The US Food and Drug Administration is reviewing the safety of ADHD drugs after the deaths of 18 patients who were prescribed Ritalin, and seven taking Strattera. Janice Hill, founder of the Overload Network, a charity which advises against the use of drugs for behavior problems, was quoted in an interview saying: "It is a timebomb. We simply don't know what the long-term risks of these drugs are."

Studies Find That Time Spend in Natural Environments Helps ADHD Symptoms

A couple of recent studies have found that kids with ADHD have fewer symptoms after spending some time outdoors - especially in a natural environment such as a park. Children with ADHD were given 20 minute walks in three different settings, along a city street, a suburb and a park with plenty of trees and grass. It was found that the children exhibited the fewest ADHD symptoms after the walk in the park!

Researchers have been conducting studies on how nature affects people for decades and are finding that time spend outdoors in a natural setting can have positive effects on practically everyone.
