What to expect at Residential Treatment Centers
Often times when children, teenagers, and young adults are acting out in such a way that they may hurt themselves or other people, drastic measures need to be taken to keep the youths safe and to help them heal. Teenagers and young adults who are cutting, struggling with an eating disorder, acting violently, or lying compulsively might need to be placed in a residential treatment center for troubled youth. There may be several of these centers within decent driving distance of your home, and they probably all cater to specific needs and have their own goals. They'll all, though, have some of the same features, which will probably include formal schooling, group and individual therapy, group activities, and strict rules.
Accedited Formal Education
Formal Schooling: Because residential treatment centers usually hold troubled youths for many months, they usually require students to complete some type of formal schooling while they are at the center. Sometimes this means that the student's home school must send homework each week so that the student can keep up in his regular classes. Other centers will staff a teacher who will help students work through appropriate coursework at their own pace. These programs can really help students who are either behind in school or are acting out in part because they aren't being challenged to their full academic abilities.
Group and Family Therapy
Group Therapy: It's important that troubled youths understand they're not alone in their feelings and struggles. Group therapy usually takes place in small groups of youths who struggle with the same issues - cutting, eating disorders, violence, addiction, etc. - and who can lean on each other for advice and support. Usually the therapy is required at residential treatment centers, as it can be a vital part of recovery. This type of help for teens is beneficial for everyone involved.
Individual Therapy
Often troubled youths who end up in a residential treatment program have been through at least some individual counseling, but in this new setting, talk therapy can be very much more effective. Depending on the facility, youths may meet with a counselor every day or just every week, and the counselor may or may not prescribe medications to alleviate some of the youths' symptoms such as depression and anxiety. When combined with group therapy, individual therapy can help students work through their problems in a constructive, positive way.
Group Activities & Team Unity
Different residential facilities will have different goals with group activities, but positive relationships should always be the goal for these facilities. Residential programs may hold family nights, game nights, and other fun activities that will help students interact with one another and the staff on a level that will build trust enough to talk through deeper issues at another time.
Strict Rules
Most residential treatment programs will have rules regarding music, books, visitation from friends and family, and any type of communication with the outside world. These rules serve to ensure that vulnerable youths can be protected in an enclosed environment as they learn to work through their problems and grow strong enough to face other influences without going back to their destructive habits.
While the rules may seem strict treatment programs are great alternatives to boot camps, wilderness camps, or other programs for troubled youth.
