Restoration Druids

What is a Resto Druid?

The druid class is one of the most versatile in World of Warcraft. Druids can be healers, tanks, caster DPS or melee DPS. Druids who choose to take the healing (or Restoration) path are called Resto Druids. We are quickly recognized by the tree of life form that we assume while healing. The only races that can choose to be a druid are Night Elves (alliance) and Tauren (horde).

Druids as Healers

Trees of Life in Your World of Warcraft Raids

Resto Druids differ from other WoW healers in that the majority of our heals are heals over time (or HOTs.) This is both a good and bad thing depending on the fight.

Here is a brief rundown of druid heals:

Rejuvenation - this is strictly a HoT unless you have the T8 set bonus

Regrowth- This heals for a base amount, and then applies a HoT

Lifebloom- This applies a HoT that stacks up to 3 times. If left to run it's full course without being refreshed it will "bloom" with a larger heal at the end, and return mana to the druid.

Wild Growth- This is an Area of Effect (AoE) HoT that places a heal over time on 5 raid members, or 6 if you are glyphed for it. (see glyphs section below)

Tranquility - This is a powerful channeled heal that heals the 5 members in your group. In a raid this will still only heal people in your immediate group. It has a 10 min CD, or 4 mins with talent points.

Nourish- This is one of our non-Hots. This is a straight heal, who's effects are scaled based upon the number of HoTs we have active on the target.

Healing Touch - This is a very long cast direct heal. In practical use, a level 80 druid almost never uses this. It can be useful if you macro it together with Nature's Swiftness. (see macros section below)

Nature's Swiftness- This is a talented point that makes any heal instant. Since most of our heals are already instant, this is only ever used with Nourish, Healing Touch, or Regrowth. (see macros section below)

Swiftmend - This talented heal consumes one of the HoTs active on the target to quickly heal them up. With a glyph, it will give you the effect of consuming the HoT without actually removing the effect. (see glyphs section below)

Resto Druid Buffs & Rezes

Gift of the Wild, Tree Form, Thorns, Innervate, Rebirth, Revive

Tree of Life- This increases our healing done, and reduces our mana spent. Oh yeah, and makes us look like ugly trees :)

Mark/Gift of the Wild- Resto Druid's almost always have improved mark/gift of the wild, so we grant each player in our raid 52 to stats, 75 to resistances, 1050 to armor and 2% to stats.

Thorns- As a resto druid, we are seldom the one buffing thorns in a raid because boomkins have an improved form of this. However, if there is no moonkin we can buff thorns, which returns nature damage to the attacker.

Innervate - for a resto druid or a priest an innervate means a full mana pool. Since we can now only take one potion in a battle, this is a great way to help out a healer (or yourself) in a very long fight.

Barkskin - This is a self buff, and is handy if you are getting beet on, both because it prevents you from being interrupted (good to use with tranquility because it is channeled) but it also increases your armor so you take somewhat less damage.

Rebirth - or Battle Rez as it's more often called allows the druid to revive one member of the raid while in combat. This makes us the ideal Soul Stone candidate because we can die, pop back, and rez another healer (or important member.)

Revive - This is your standard 10 sec cast out of combat rez.

How to spend your druid's talent points

This is the talent tree that I run with, and the one I would recommend to any resto druid. I know there can be variations on this that are also effective, but this is a good base to start on before you tweak it to your liking. Text in italics are my personal notes on the skills.

For an easy view of this talent tree, CLICK HERE, or read the summary below.

Level 80 Druid (11/0/60)

Balance (11 points)

Genesis - Rank 5/5
Increases the damage and healing done by your periodic damage and healing effects by 5%. ----- Obviously this adds 5% healing to all your HoTs, which are the majority of your heals, so this skill seems an obvious choice.

Moonglow - Rank 3/3
Reduces the Mana cost of your Moonfire, Starfire, Starfall, Wrath, Healing Touch, Nourish, Regrowth and Rejuvenation spells by 9%. ----- If you're like me you usually have a regrowth and a rejuv up on at least a couple targets all the time, 9% really adds up.

Nature's Majesty - Rank 2/2
Increases the critical strike chance of your Wrath, Starfire, Starfall, Nourish and Healing Touch spells by 4%. ----- Ok, crit is never bad but honestly this skill is just to get us enough points to get down to Nature's Splendor

Nature's Splendor - Rank 1/1
Increases the duration of your Moonfire and Rejuvenation spells by 3 sec, your Regrowth spell by 6 sec, and your Insect Swarm and Lifebloom spells by 2 sec. ----- Honestly, this is a must for me. Having those few extra seconds before I have to refresh my heals, in a long battle saves soooo much mana. Also, if I'm spot healing it gives each person I heal that little extra bit of healing for my mana.

Feral Combat (0 points)

--None--

Restoration (60 points)

Improved Mark of the Wild - Rank 2/2
Increases the effects of your Mark of the Wild and Gift of the Wild spells by 40%, and increases all of your total attributes by 2%. ----- The extra stats and the 2% are nice, plus it moves us down the tree

Nature's Focus - Rank 3/3
Reduces the pushback suffered from damaging attacks while casting Healing Touch, Wrath, Entangling Roots, Cyclone, Nourish, Regrowth and Tranquility by 70%. ----- Yeah, limiting push back is good, although usually I'm casting instant things anyway... but this IS the most logical choice to move us down the tree

Subtlety - Rank 3/3
Reduces the threat generated by your restoration spells by 30% and reduces the chance your helpful spells, Moonfire, and Insect Swarm will be dispelled by 30%. ----- Less threat, less aggro, less dead trees

Natural Shapeshifter - Rank 3/3
Reduces the mana cost of all shapeshifting by 30%. ------ These talents are to get us down to Master Shapeshifter

Intensity - Rank 3/3
Allows 50% of your Mana regeneration to continue while casting and causes your Enrage ability to instantly generate 10 rage. ----- This is the skill that makes our spirt so useful, it allows that mana regen to continue while casting. Love this talent!!

Omen of Clarity - Rank 1/1
Each of the Druid's damage, healing spells and auto attacks has a chance of causing the caster to enter a Clearcasting state. The Clearcasting state reduces the Mana, Rage or Energy cost of your next damage, healing spell or offensive ability by 100% ----- Hey, I'm never gonna turn down a mana free heal, are you?

Master Shapeshifter - Rank 2/2
Tree of Life Form - Increases healing by 4%. ----- Yeah, we spend a lot of talents to get 4%, but it's worth it

Improved Rejuvenation - Rank 3/3
Increases the effect of your Rejuvenation spell by 15%. ----- I use rejuv alot, so this is a no brainer

Nature's Swiftness - Rank 1/1
When activated, your next Nature spell with a base casting time less than 10 sec. becomes an instant cast spell. ----- I macro this with Healing Touch and call it my "Oh F*$%" heal :) See the macros section below

Gift of Nature - Rank 5/5
Increases the effect of all healing spells by 10%. ----- Yeah... 10%, again a no brainer

Improved Tranquility - Rank 2/2
Reduces threat caused by Tranquility by 100%, and reduces the cooldown by 60%. ----- Honestly I don't use tranquillity frequently enough to really make this a good use of talent points, but I had 2 points left and I do use it *occasionally* so... there you go

Empowered Touch - Rank 2/2
Your Healing Touch spell gains an additional 40% of your bonus healing effects. ----- This is another one of those talents that doesn't get used much. I NEVER cast healing touch, unless it's with Nature's Swiftness (see macros below)... BUT I had the talent points to burn, and on this occasions when I need it, I need it to be big so.... I spent them here

Nature's Bounty - Rank 5/5
Increases the critical effect chance of your Regrowth and Nourish spells by 25%. -- ----- 25% is a fair amount to crit!

Living Spirit - Rank 3/3
Increases your total Spirit by 15%. ----- I play a very spirit focused druid. Adding 15% to that only increases the effects of our tree of life, and our mana regen. This is another talent I love!

Swiftmend - Rank 1/1
Consumes a Rejuvenation or Regrowth effect on a friendly target to instantly heal them an amount equal to 12 sec. of Rejuvenation or 18 sec. of Regrowth. ----- This is a good quick heal when the damage is coming fast. This is really best when used with the glyph (see the glyphs section below)

Empowered Rejuvenation - Rank 5/5
The bonus healing effects of your healing over time spells is increased by 20%. ----- Let's see 20% to HoTS and we cast almost all HoTs... yes please

Living Seed - Rank 3/3
When you critically heal your target with Swiftmend, Regrowth, Nourish or Healing Touch spell you have a 100% chance to plant a Living Seed on the target for 30% of the amount healed. The Living Seed will bloom when the target is next attacked. Lasts 15 sec. ----- Since we have the talent increasing the crit of Regrowth and Nourish by 25% this seems like a logical companion talent

Revitalize - Rank 3/3
Your Rejuvenation and Wild Growth spells have a 15% chance to restore 8 Energy, 4 Rage, 1% Mana or 16 Runic Power per tick. ----- A nice little way to help the raid in a long battle, it all adds up!

Tree of Life - Rank 1/1
Reduces the mana cost of your healing over time spells by 20% and grants the ability to shapeshift into the Tree of Life. While in this form you increase healing received by 6% for all party and raid members within 45 yards, and you can only cast Restoration spells in addition to Innervate, Barkskin, Nature's Grasp and Thorns spells. ----- Obviously more healing and less mana spent is a good choice... even if the tree graphic looks like crap!

Improved Tree of Life - Rank 3/3
Increases your armor contribution from items while in Tree of Life Form by 200%, and increases your healing spell power by 15% of your spirit while in Tree of Life Form. ----- We are stacking spirit, we have living spirit talent, so this actually adds a decent amount of healing!

Gift of the Earthmother - Rank 5/5
Reduces the base global cooldown of your Rejuvenation, Lifebloom and Wild Growth spells by 20%. ----- Less Global CD = faster heals... yep. I wasn't sure it was worth it until I tried speccing without it... you really DO notice a difference

Wild Growth - Rank 1/1
Heals up to 5 friendly party or raid members within 15 yards of the target for 1442 over 7 sec. The amount healed is applied quickly at first, and slows down as the Wild Growth reaches its full duration. ----- Obviously this is great in any situation where the entire raid takes damage. I would also suggest glyphing for it (see glyphs section below)

Resto Druid Glyphs

What I run with, and your other options!

Glyph of Wild Growth (Major Glyph)
Wild Growth can affect 1 additional target. ----- In AoE healing situations, that one extra target makes a big difference, defiantly get this glyph

Glyph of Swiftmend (Major Glyph)
Your Swiftmend ability no longer consumes a Rejuvenation or Regrowth effect from the target. ----- I also see this as a MUST have, because it allows you to get that instant heal from swiftmend and not have to spend the time or mana reapplying the HoT

Glyph of Rejuvenation (Major Glyph)
While your Rejuvenation targets are below 50% health, you will heal them for an additional 50% health. ----- I use this sometimes BUT I think that your third major glyph choice has a couple of decent options, and I sometimes switch around. Decide for yourself what you think is most important.

Glyph of Healing Touch (Major Glyph)
Decreases the cast time of Healing Touch by 1.5 sec., the mana cost by 25%, and the amount healed by 50%. ----- I see no use for this at 80

Glyph of Innervate (Major Glyph)
Innervate now grants the caster 90% of her> base mana pool over 20 sec sec in addition to the normal effects of Innervate. ----- This isn't a bad one if you find you're spending your Innervate on other people more than on yourself. This way you both pretty much get full mana. Not a bad choice for your third glyph

Glyph of Lifebloom (Major Glyph)
Increases the duration of Lifebloom by 1 sec. ----- This is also not a bad option for your third glyph either, particularly if you spot heal with LB a lot.

Glyph of Nourish (Major Glyph)
Your Nourish heals an additional 6% for each of your heal over time effects present on the target. ----- I don't feel like I use Nourish enough to justify this, but if your heal style uses a lot of nourish, it seems like a decent option

Glyph of Regrowth (Major Glyph)
Increases the healing of your Regrowth spell by 20% if your Regrowth effect is still active on the target. ----- If you are like me and always have a Regrowth up on the tank(s) that this is like always having an extra 20% healing on the spell, so again, not a bad option

Glyph of Rebirth (Major Glyph)
Players resurrected by Rebirth are returned to life with 100% health. ----- As nice as it would be to be reborn with 100% health, I think there are much better choices than this glyph for a resto druid

Glyph of Aquatic Form (Minor Glyph)
Increases your swim speed by 50% while in Aquatic Form. Let's face it minor glyphs are mostly useless, but this does add a bit of convenience. Swimming is as fast as being mounted with this glyph, so why not?

Glyph of Unburdened Rebirth (Minor Glyph)
Your Rebirth spell no longer requires a reagent. This is handy, saves you from having to carry reagents... they should rename it to "Glyph of one extra slot in your bag"... plus you never have to worry about being the n00b who forgot to buy reagents!

Glyph of the Wild (Minor Glyph)
Mana cost of your Mark of the Wild and Gift of the Wild spells reduced by 50%. - Ok this is pretty crap, because how often do you cast GotW, and when you do, its almost always out of combat... but it fills a minor slot and the other options really aren't that thrilling either

Resto Druid Macros

Some of the macros I use

Instant Healing Touch
This macro puts Nature's Swiftness together with Healing Houch, my "Oh F*$%" button for emergencies!

/cast Nature's Swiftness
/stopcasting
/cast [help] Healing Touch; [target=player] Healing Touch

Instant Heal on Me
Same as above only targeted on myself

cast Nature's Swiftness
/stopcasting
/cast [target=player] Healing Touch

Self Innervate
This lets me cast innervate on myself without switching target

#showtooltip
/castsequence reset=30 [target=player] Innervate

Prowl
I dono, I just think it's handy to macro cat form and prowl together for quick stealth

# showtooltip Prowl
/cast [nostance:3] Cat Form
/cast [stance:3, nostealth] Prowl

Root Focus
This is more of an arena macro, but if you click as normal it roots your target, if you right-click it roots your focus.

#showtooltip Entangling Roots
/cast [button:2, target=focus] Entangling Roots; Entangling Roots

Cyclone Focus
Like above, only with Cyclone!

#showtooltip Cyclone
/cast [button:2, target=focus] Cyclone; Cyclone

Resto Druid Gear

General and specific gear recommendations for restoration druids

I'm not going to list gear piece by piece because gear is always being added, and let's face it.... even at 80 there is a lot of resto druid gear.

General Information

Main Stats - In my experienced opinion you should focus on stats in this order of priority. This is for gear, enchants and socketing! This is of course for PvE....

  • Spell Power - Adding spell power to increase the size of your heals is never bad but I firmly believe you are better socketing and focusing on spirit first and SP as a secondary stat.

    1. Spirit - It adds healing, it adds mana regen, it is hands down the best stat for a resto druid, especially when you consider that straight spell power doesn't scale great on HoTs

    2. Intellect - Intellect will increase your mana pool, add to your mana regen, and increase your crit. Its a universal caster stat.

    Secondary Stats
Stats like M/5, Stamina, Crit and Haste are never unwelcome, but aren't really a focus stat either.

    Useless Stats
Strength, Agility, and Hit are pretty much worthless to a resto druid.

  • Resto Druid Mods

Some of my favorite interface mods!

I know different people and different guilds have their own preferences about what mods are best. These are my personal choices... if you want to share yours please do so in the guestbook!

Healbot - I don't use this in 5 mans, but I love it in raids. It lets me 1-click heal for the entire raid, lets me see their debuffs and remove them, and lets me check that they have my buff.

Benecaster - This puts little buttons by each players picture... kinda a handy way to heal in a 5 man. It does burn though memory though, so if you already lag, don't use it!

Deadly Boss Mods - As a healer it's not always easy to watch 25 health bars and still be situationally aware. DBMs warnings really help a lot!

G15 - You don't need a G15 keyboard to use this. This lets you change your interface to have more than the two rows of bars on the bottom and two on the right. I tend to put everything on a button so, I like it!

    About the Author

My Background as a Resto Druid

I have been playing World of Warcraft since it's vanilla days. Back then I was a PvP hunter, so I'm sorry to say I never had the opportunity to heal any of the classic raids back before they were classic.

I rolled my druid shortly after my hunter hit 70 in BC as something to do when I wasn't in Arena. My first talent point when I turned level 10 was on the restoration tree, and I've always been a restoration druid. The more I played and leveled my druid the more I liked her until eventually she undoubtedly became my main.

I raided a fair amount in BC and saw almost all of the content. Once WotLK came out I leveled to 80 very quickly and started raiding right away. I transfered servers and joined a progressed raiding guild. Currently we are working our way though the hard modes in Ulduar.
