What I found when I was writing my resume, in the beginning I did what I am sure most of you did was pull out your old resume, blow off the dust, and add in your most recent experience from your most recent position. What happened when I did this and submitted my resume to Monster, Career Builder, etc I received mediocre responses back from the employers and head hunters themselves.
What I did learn after adding a month to my unemployment was my resume was out dated. The format all looked pretty, I used Times New Roman, 10 pt font and all. I had my resume in MS Word format, Text format, and for resumes I was mailing, I used heavy weight light colored gray resume paper. The problem I had found out, was that the layout although chronologically correct, was missing an objective statement that targeted the job I was seeking, and skilled wording throughout my resume that emphasized my key strengths and how I added value to the company.
The second dilemma and key to landing a job interview with the companies that I desired, was I was sending out the resume, not phoning up, or emailing to express my further interest in the position, which is something that you must and need to do. When I started to do this, it helped, but I found myself in the situation of having to tell a busy hiring manager how I qualified for the position. To make a long story short. What I was missing was an effective cover letter to help sell my resume to my employer.
Think of your resume offering your skills, but how does an employer know how you are suited for the position. Well they have to look at their job description and read your resume and start to make the conclusions. This takes time, something that most managers do not have much of as they also have their department to run. So how do you bridge the gap? With a Cover Letter that matches your skills and abilities with their job requirements. You sell yourself in this letter, and then in your resume you give them all the hard facts.
I got my resume template and the steps needed to write an effective cover letter to sell myself from reading and taking Jim Sweeney's program.
