Count Down the Days to YOUR Retro-Style Christmas!

This counter is for all of you folks who are you getting antsy anticipating that paper-ripping, fudge-eating, sugar-crashing, ugly sweater, turkey-feasting, tinsel-between-your-toes, Christmas Story marathon, reindeer-watching, so-glad-I-don't-have-to-shop-anymore, big day that only comes around once a year. OK, I really put it here for little ole, impatient me.

A Little History About Christmas

Christmas (), also referred to as Christmas Day, is an annual holiday celebrated on December 25 that commemorates the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.Christmas, Merriam-Webster. Retrieved October 6, 2008."Christmas," MSN Encarta. Retrieved October 6, 2008."Christmas", The Catholic Encyclopedia, 1913. The day marks the beginning of the larger season of Christmastide, which lasts twelve days. The nativity of Jesus, which is the basis for the anno Domini system of dating, is thought to have occurred between 7 and 2 BC.Smith, Mark D. "Of Jesus and Quirinius." Catholic Biblical Quarterly; Apr2000, Vol. 62 Issue 2, pp292-293.Pearson, Brook W. R. "The Lucan Censuses, Revisited." Catholic Biblical Quarterly; Apr99, Vol. 61 Issue 2, p282. December 25 is not known to be Jesus' actual date of birth, and the date may have been chosen to correspond with either a Roman festival"Christmas", EncartaRoll, Susan K., Toward the Origins of Christmas, (Peeters Publishers, 1995), p.130.Tighe, William J., "Calculating Christmas". or the winter solstice.Newton, Isaac, Observations on the Prophecies of Daniel, and the Apocalypse of St. John (1733). Ch. XI.A sun connection is possible because Christians consider Jesus to be the "sun of righteousness" prophesied in Malachi 4:2.

Modern customs of the holiday include gift-giving, Church celebrations, and the display of various decorations?including the Christmas tree, lights, mistletoe, nativity scenes, and holly. Santa Claus (also referred to as Father Christmas, although the two figures have different origins) is a popular mythological figure often associated with bringing gifts at Christmas for children. Santa is generally believed to be the result of a syncretization between Saint Nicholas and elements from pagan Nordic and Christian mythology, and his modern appearance is believed to have originated in 19th century media.

Christmas is celebrated throughout the Christian population, but is also celebrated by many non-Christians as a secular, cultural festival. Because gift-giving and several other aspects of the holiday involve heightened economic activity among both Christians and non-Christians, Christmas has become a major event for many retailers.

A Little Dedication...

I have to dedicate this lens to my mother, Elizabeth Jean, who passed away on November 29, 2002, because it was mainly she who made Christmas a very, very special time for my family and me. My father was and still is a huge help in making Christmas fun, special and memorable. My mother was the one who came up with crazy ideas such as making boot imprints in the fireplace ashes to convince me (and freak me out) that Santa really did exist, and that he had actually managed to fit his fat behind down our narrow chimney on Christmas Eve and leave dozens of toys, games, dolls and no telling how many cavities-worth of calorie-laden candy. My mother LOVED Christmas, and I think she probably thought about Christmas every day of the year, just as I did while I was growing up. I have always been told and believe that when we get to Heaven we will have everything we want; if this is true, then my mother has an eternity's supply of chocolate, her favorite child, I mean cat, "Peaches" with her, skyscraper stacks of books and magazines, enough southern-style iced tea to swim in, peppermint chewing gum that never loses its flavor, and the biggest and most beautiful Christmas tree that one can ever imagine. My mom now celebrates Christmas with the man for whom the holiday was created in the first place: Jesus Christ. I hope Jesus and Mom are planning a huge combination birthday party/Christmas, and I hope all of Heaven rocks out on December 25th! Mom, I love you and miss you, and PLEASE do not make boot imprints in God's fireplace....you can NOT fool Him!
