How Does A Reverse Phone Directory Work

Using a reverse phone directory is a great way to get all sorts of information about a person. With nothing more than a few digits and an Internet connection, it's easy to find out a host of facts about a particular individual.

A reverse phone directory only requires an area code and a telephone number to use. Finding a reverse phone directory is generally very easy with a computer and an Internet connection. There are many different services available that provide reverse phone directory access. Some of these cost money to use, but many are free at least for looking up listed telephone numbers.

Getting started using a reverse phone directly involves finding a site that provides these services and plugging in the number. If the number is listed, basic information will be returned. The name of the person who owns the phone number will be revealed along with the calling address. This is pretty much just like using a phone book in reverse, thus the name. Should a telephone number happen to be unpublished, some services can still access and pass on the information. These services will typically charge a fee for doing this, however.

In addition to names and addresses, the information gleaned from a reverse phone directory might be enough to perform a full background check on a person. If that person happens to have a phone registered in their name, the number and the name alone tend to be enough to connect a person to public records, criminal records and so on. A full background check through a reverse phone directory will cost some money.

When using a reverse phone directory to do a background check, it's important to keep a few things in mind. The name and telephone number can be enough to pull records, but what is returned might not actually belong to the person an inquirer thinks it does. Without date of birth, Social Security number and other similar identifying information, it isn't necessarily wise to make major decisions based on the returned results. More identifying factors are likely needed for a 100-percent match. If, for example, a man has the same name as his father and they live together, the identity of the phone line owner and the resulting background records could be questionable.

Despite a glitch or two, a reverse phone directory can be a great way to glean all sorts of information. From names and addresses to criminal records, a reverse phone directory is like a phone book that's been supercharged.
