My newest addition, Toto The Shih Tzu / Maltese is a testament to Dog Training Books. While the other dogs that I have had have been easily trained, she defies common sense and required me to hit the books to find what would work for her. Here is my review of what worked and what didn't

What Doesn't Work

What worked with my previous dogs, a very smart lab and equally smart, if not slightly crazy, poodle, is what most people do when dog training. Common sense dictates positive reinforcement , treats, and lots of praise. There are problems with that, eventually, even the best dog training books will tell you that food ceases to be a treat. Some dogs will not do the command without a treat , and when full will just stop doing the command at all. My little shih Tzu became full very quickly, so treats were a very short and temporary fix.

What Does Work , and the Dog Training Book that can help you learn it.

Have you ever been to see a show with animals performing tricks? Did you ever wonder where you could get the dog training book that will show you how they do all the complicated tricks that they do? If you notice, every once in a while they will use food, but you will also notice that they also use a noise , called a clicker, to direct the animal. Clicker training is very useful in many ways. You can teach your dog a variety of trick, beyond sit and stay, all with a relatively few simple steps. Your dog will learn to obey the commands without a constant reinforcement of treats. Believe it or dog, the system is actually very simple and I found within days we could sit, stay, heel, and more. The book's authors also offer a free 7 day simple dog training course from their website, www.doggietraining.info . From there, I was able to delve further and am working on getting my shih Tzu to ring a bell to potty and wipe her feet on the mat. Now%u2026.if only I could train my husband as well.
