From the Shrapnel years to today Richie Kotzen is a prolific songwriter, guitarist and singer.

OK ... so if I am honest, it may have been the red pants Richie Kotzen was wearing on the Poison seven days live DVD that first caught my attention even though I have never been a Poison fan. Richie snared the gig with Poison after playing the band his song "Stand" which would become the first single released of Poison's 1993 album "Native Tongue" - I still prefer when Richie performs this song as he does on his latest release "Live in Sao Paulo".

Mother Head's Family Reunion is a well worn album in my collection and I loved the fact that Richie is technically brilliant and yet he can hold back to give the song a chance to breathe and exist in its own right. Not just a guitarist as many think - Richie is a musician, a singer and a songwriter dedicated to the craft.

I appreciate Richie's technical skill, however I love the fact that Richie is always a performer and the skill always is presented in a way that is entertaining - something lacking from many of the guitar tech workshops.Richie Kotzen with Poison (Native Tongue) 1993

The fact that he is somewhat easy on the eye doesn't hurt at all either, which is an opinion that I am not alone in it seems as Michael Molenda points out in his article for Guitar Player Magazine ...

"Man Crush Alert! Yes, Richie Kotzen is stunning. Anyone who became entranced by music in the era of angelic or strange beauties such as Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and Brian Jones will likely view Kotzen as the pure evocation of rock godliness. But, in Kotzen's case, you don't have to host some Tony Robbins-esque Outer Beauty versus Inner Beauty debate inside your head, because the man's guitar chops are as magnificent as his visage."

The single best album

Into The Black is my all time favorite Richie Kotzen album. It is dark and personal and I am sure was cathartic for both him and his listeners. The highlight tracks for me were: You Can't Save Me, Livin' In Bliss, Doin' What the Devil Says to Do, Misunderstood, Angel .... OK I love the whole album. It is rare these days to find an album that you can listen to from start to finish without feeling let down in the middle. For that reason you will always find this album on high rotation in my car.

More albums you simply shouldn't miss

Live in Sao Paulo is Richie's latest release - I love "Remember" which can also be heard on his album "Get Up" but on the live track I love how he finishes this version with "I think you're crazy" ; Mother Head's Family Reunion was playing on repeat all night at my wedding - it was the only music I wanted to listen to be it "Love Devine" and "Woman and a Man" or "Socialite" and "Cover Me"; Return of the Mother Head's Family Reunion or Go Faster depending on where you live took Richie back into a band scenario, outstanding tracks for me were "Dust" and "Chase It".

Trivia

Richie Kotzen (born February 3, 1970 in Reading, Pennsylvania) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter.

At a young age, Richie Kotzen was taken by music and first began playing piano at the age of five. At the age of seven he was inspired by New York City band KISS to learn the electric guitar. Relentlessly developing chops and his own unique voice on the guitar, he started his career in a band named Arthurs Museum. Kotzen was eventually discovered by Shrapnel Records' Mike Varney, and he recorded his first album by the age of 19. He created the video Rock Chops for REH video in 1989, highlighting many of his formative techniques, including using wide-intervals and fluid sweeping.

In 1991, Kotzen made his big break when he joined the rock band Poison at age 21, co-writing and performing on the album Native Tongue. This album produced two top twenty singles which Richie co-wrote, "Stand" and "Until You Suffer Some (Fire & Ice)". In 1999 Kotzen replaced Paul Gilbert as guitarist in the mainstream rock band Mr. Big. Kotzen maintained the band's enormous success, performing on the Mr. Big record Get Over It, which sold more than 175,000 copies in its first two weeks in Japan, eventually reaching platinum status. Kotzen also contributed guitars to Mr. Big's subsequent release Actual Size. The record included the Kotzen song Shine, which debuted at number one on Japanese radio charts. Following the disbanding of Mr. Big, Kotzen released the solo album Change, in 2003. The title track, and the song Get A Life were featured in TV commercials throughout Japan.

In 2002 Kotzen bought a commercial building in Los Angeles and established a recording Studio/Production company. He has since been producing acclaimed solo albums and collaborating with various figures in rock, jazz, and fusion including jazz legend Stanley Clarke.

In mid 2006 Kotzen was the opening act in Japan for the Rolling Stones on their Bigger Bang tour.

He has also covered various songs from the Gundam franchise including Soldiers of Sorrow, The Beginning, The Winner, Blue Star, and Fly! Gundam.

Never knew so much about the group poison or Kotzen. Having worked in the entertainment space, many artists have one "public" known niche but behind the scenes their talents ie music and songs show up in under other artists or venues that go unnoticed. Sometimes they do this because love of music but also to be able to expand out of their niche genre too. Thanks for the bg on this talented artist
