Disbelief and Mass Confusion
The Rick Danko Guestbook
From the lens Rick Danko.
This is a place to talk about Rick. Ask questions, express your feelings, air gripes, make suggestions--say anything you want about Rick Danko, The Band, or this lens. But please--keep it clean, and keep insults OUT. Rick was about love and friendship; hatred and mean-spiritedness are unwelcome here.

- What an amazing lens. Been a big fan since I first saw The Last Waltz when it came out at the cinema. He's the kind of singer that makes you want to sing - but only if you could do it like him. Thanks a bunch for this lens.

- I remember many a gig on "The Trust Me Tour" with Frank Sanzo as Manager Buddy Cage on Pedal Steel Guitar,Sredni Vollmer on Harmonica and Vocals ,Rick Danko playing an old acoustic guitar and singing vocals and myself,Arnold Wood Caldwell Driving and occasionally humping Buddy's steel and Rick's Fender Twin Amp (that used to belong to Paul Butterfield) actually Rick and Sredni used it together and Rick would always sneer and say that that Mike Bloomfield was curlded up in it asleep...those were the times man...the late 80s If you like old Fender check out a site of my best friend I was the purveyor and he had the dough...http:www//stuckclutchamps.com PEACE MAN,Arnold

- Thanks. I just saw The Last Waltz for the first time a few mos ago and I've been looking at youtube videos and listening to the Band's music ever since. The only songs I knew before this were Cripple Creek & Dixie, so discovering the music is really a treat for me. This is a great site, I really enjoyed reading through the stories.
I think I read the article referred to in the "scary side of fandom" piece just yesterday. My reaction was: creepy, weird, and strongly suggestive of borderline personality disorder. (Go ahead and delete this if it counts as mean; I don't mind.)
PS my security word was Snugtweak! How funny.

- My first memory of The Band was around 1973; I was 13. Six months later, I was hitch-hiking up the road (I was a precocious young girl) and from the radio sprang, "Stage Fright". Between that song, and "Don't Do It", I'd been blissfully hooked- but didn't know who it was, and my ride had Rock of Ages blaring "Stage Fright", with Rick's voice, I'd been really seeking to find out who performed these songs! The next year, I was able to catch Dylan and then Dylan with the Band together, and was a fan for life. Rick seemed so sweet and endearing. Wish I could go back to those times.

- I have been a fan of the Band since I was 14 when I first heard Rock of Ages, three years after its release. There was always something so different, so special about Rick's voice. Then I remember when I saw him in The Last Waltz at the Ziegfiield in '78, I just couldn't believe how friggin adorable he was, yowza! I went to see Rick back in '80 or '81 when he played in a local rock club in Queens, NY, unfortunately I worked there so I really didn't get to enjoy him.
I'm so glad I found this site, thank you Carol. It's nice to read what a truly "nice" person he was. So sad that he's gone but it takes a very special person to be missed by so many after almost a decade.

- God bless you Carol, for sharing your Rick Danko stories and insights. I have loved The Band since the late 60s, and their music continues to bless my experience. The Beatles are incredible, but there's a magic in The Band's music that no other group has touched. Thank you Rick, Richard, Garth, Levon and Robbie. And thanks again, Carol.

I'm not sure who currently owns Big Pink, or if The Band ever played in WV, though I imagine they would have. There was a NY Times article about the family who bought Big Pink a few years ago--I am sure it is common knowledge among Band fans, but I just have no idea.

- Carol, thanks for sharing your stories with us. Me and my wife met Rick at The Joyous Lake. He came walking in and sat near us. We began chatting about the baseball game that was on the Tube. He never introduced himself as "Rick Danko", just Rick. I think he knew that we knew who he was. We were just so blown away that we were sitting with a guy that is one of our musical heroes that an autograph never entered my mind! When friends ask what we talked about, I say baseball! That's my story about a guy I met named Rick.

- Hi Bobbo--there are tons of soundboards and audience recordings in circulation on trade lists, etc. But as far as any kind of "official" release--I really would have no idea. There was a parade of people "manning" the soundboard at Rick's shows, supposedly on Rick's behalf, over the years--some were legit with pure intentions (i.e., to keep a copy for Rick), others with their own goals and $$ in mind. Rick did not get all of the shows himself--I have no idea what became of some of them.

- Bobbo--I believe what I said was: "Of all the musicians who accompanied Rick in a supportive capacity over the years, I think Sredni was one of the most talented, perhaps the most versatile, and definitely the most humble." I did not say he was better than Aaron, or that he was the best sideman. All of the musicians Rick played with were very different; it is difficult (and unnecessary) to make a distinction as to who was "the best."
e--I wish your friend peace, and I wish you peace, too.

The number of attendants and workers at the site were amazed when I told them of my days as Rick's drummer in 1959-60-61. Most them knew him and had nothing but warm feelings and memories of this unforgettable man. When I got the hug from Levon the emotions really took over. Glenster

- Thanks all of the great infromation about Rck. While I didn't know him...in many ways I did. I became aware of him and his bouncy bass playing in 1968. I bought an bass in 1970 because I loved his style. When I saw his Ampeg I immediately pried the frets out of a perfectly god bass. I own an Ampeg AEB-1 which I bought because of Rick's Ampeg... I also played and owned many Gibsons. I figured if he liked them they must be good. I have ben a bass layer now for 38 years as a result of Rick's influenece. I saw him perform many time and cried when he died. I recently went to Levon's Midnight Ramble and Levon's band covered a few of Rick's best tunes, Wonderful. Thank you.

- there was a concert at Whistler's(just off Tinker Street) a place to eat, pool, basketball courts, portasans & lots of place to sit & relax near the stage--Levon played,Dr. John,Max Weinberg--many great bands--Rick showed up well before his show & as soon as he got there, those of us baking in the sun(& baking in general!) felt a wave of energy--Rick was running through, saying hi to everyone & exuding great charisma & soul--he recognized me from town(other shows, grand union, etc.) & we spoke for awhile---but then he saw the toddlers & the kiddies & he was so happy & fun loving with them--pure joy to see...
Years later The Band did a Memorial Day show @ South Street Seaport in NYC & my baby came with us--i brought him to see "his Ricky' & the guys--Levon & rick gave him a kiss & played with him just before starting the show!!

- Hi Carol
I hadn't visited here since the very beginning and found my way back early this morning. Alot of smiles and a few tears later, I just want to tell you how wonderful it is to feel Rick's amazing spirit again through all that you've shared.
I loved your "Blondie" story :-) and actually have one of my own (about the man.. not the band :-) where I managed to also get "the look". (Not the first time, and it wouldn't be the last either). I had...and still have... a real bad habit of leaning back in my chair when combining the art of conversation with the art of social drinking, and found myself leaning a bit too far one night and crashing down backwards at the feet of a startled Mr.Chaplin ..and staring forwards into the concerned (and more amused than I thought the situation warranted) face of Mr.Danko. And then - the look. He never said a word.. but I knew he was wondering why he ever took me out in public :-)
So that was my BLOND(ie) moment. But Sssh... don't tell anyone :-)

- CArol - thanks for clearing up the Danko Shuffle mystery. I never could quite figure out exactly WHAT it was. I didn't see anything that particularly looked shuffle-like, at least not consistently. Now, the Ralph Kramden thing - that's right on the money.
I too always wondered how he could sing so beautifully and play music so well and yet...he sometimes looked like a big old (happy) moose up there. But things like that are what made Rick so darn endearing. A guy who looks and acts and, yes, shuffles like that -- you'd just wanna run up to the stage when it was all over and give him a big hug and beg him to be your bestest friend - heck, I might even BAKE him a chocolate cake! (and I haven't done that in 40 years)

- Mike~
I don't think it was a criticism of you or your post, per se. You are more than welcome to post here. This little site was created out of love for Rick, nothing more, nothing less. It's to keep him here with us as much as possible, to share memories and laughs (and tears) with people who knew him, and to help those who didn't know him but would like to know more find out about him.
Again, I don't have a bunch of "rules." All I ask is that there are no insults, hatred, or gossip, and that we keep the topics Rick-related.
Jon Taplin certainly was and is part of The Band's history; but, just for the record, he was never--ever--a Band or Dylan manager. He was a road manager then tour manager--very, very different from a manager.

- Mike, although I would never presume to speak for Carol or anyone else, here's how I feel. Although your enthusiasm is understandable and appreciated, and Jon definitely played a significant role in the history of Rick and the Band, perhaps links like the one you posted here are better suited to a site that contains more general information about Rick and the Band, like Jan's wonderful site. I just feel that this site has a very different "tone," if you will. There isn't a site I know of that contains more interesting and accurate information about Rick, yet it's presented with a whole lot of heart and humor. It's as close as many of us will ever come to knowing him personally. That is how I feel when I read the things Carol writes. While I would be interested in hearing Jon's views, that's not why I come to THIS site. Here it's all about Rick! :-) But, as I said before, that's just my opinion. BTW, I could be wrong, but I don't think Jon was ever the Band's manager. Carol?

- I just wanted to briefly explain why I enjoy networking blogs such as Jon Taplin's as I did yesterday. Not everyone is aware of Rick Danko & The Band-related items out on the web for one reason or another. As I'm sure many are well aware, Jon is a frmr mgr to Dylan & The Band & was a producer of The Last Waltz & other Robbie Robertson productions. Jon also discusses some Band items on his blog & he intelligently & professionally addresses many issues relative to The Band, as well as, politics & the media. Jon is also often interviewed in post-The Band video interviews etc. You even interviewed him for The Band website's BandBites.
I was in no way promoting certain politics as some of the folks on The Band "GB" inconsiderately discuss. They are many of the reasons I usually do not get involved w/ too many guest books / chat rms as is often the case, folks are rather unaware or just do not completely read into what is stated. Jon is relative to Ricky & The Band & if folks don't want to continue reading/visiting his work, then don't. I enjoy informing folks of cool stuff that's out there. It is great that a frmr Band mgr is as accessible as his is if one wants to learn more about Ricky & The Band.
Please see it for that reason & that reason only.

- Hi Marlowes Mom~Unfortunately, I do not have a text of Robbie's eulogy, and don't think there is one--except, of course, for Robbie's copy. I honestly don't know if the memorial was recorded, though I tend to think that it was.
As far as a full-scale biography, I am in the midst of working on Rick's story. I agree that he was a study in contradictions--and hagiography has never been my intention, as it is not necessary; thank you for seeing that.
Rick's true story does not need to be sugar-coated. He was a wonderful person, an amazing musician, and a great friend who, like all of us, had human flaws. He was and is someone worth knowing about, flaws and all.

Also would love to see you do a full-length biography; seems you would be in a great position to do something honest, neither hagiography nor wallowing in the sordid. So much of Rick's fascination lies in his contradictions.

- Hi Jon! Like you, I love Woodstock and always spend some time with Rick when I'm there too. Just in case you haven't checked them out, here's a few places I was slow to visit but enjoyed alot. The Bearsville Theater Complex is wonderful. We finally caught a show there this past fall. The theater smells of wood and leather and you can literally *feel* the history of the place. Also, the food at The Bear Cafe is outstanding! Opus 40 is a must-see. Some of the photos from Jericho were shot there. The place is absolutely breathtaking and it was truly a spiritual experience. No other way to describe it. If you haven't participated in or even watched one of the drum circles in the center of town, you must! They hold them on Sundays from 4 PM to 6 PM. You may think you couldn't possibly take part but trust me, you might just be surprised. (I was!) It was a blast! Thanks to everyone for sharing their memories of Rick. Please keep them coming. - Hi Carol! Wish I could pick a signature song for Rick, but anything Rick sang had his signature on it. Even My Love! No matter the song, Rick was instantly recognizable. Of course, all voices sound different, but Rick's was one of the most beautiful ever; the most moving, unique, and one of the most flexible voices to ever hit the airwaves as well. To me , they were all signature songs. But, trying to look at it from the perspective of most well known, I'd have to say It Makes No Difference, Stage Fright, and Rick's verse from The Weight are a photo finish.

Richard came "home" for that one, just before he died. It was a highlight of the evening when Rick "goosed" the mayor after his introduction of the group. Just like Rick to do that I guess. Thanks Carol!

- Carol - I love the cowboy picture - just wish it was bigger.
Watching one of your video clips, I came upon probably the best/clearest video I've seen from the 1966 dylan tour. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO0gSJGJ7Fs IT has many many closeups of Garth, which is pretty unusual - and ahhhh - he was beyoootiful! The video doesn't have nearly enough of Rick and The Hair. That Hair reminds me so much of the haircuts I used to give two of my brothers who had that wavy thick hair like Rick's around the same time. IT was impossible! Just whack it off the best you can... So in reality, Rick and The Hair (I love) wd be better titled "Rick and the Bad Haircut". CAn't help it - I love it anyway!

- With regrad to Rick's first solo CD, here's a link from The Band site on the Rick Danko '77 CD history and Arista's aborted re-release in 2002:
http://theband.hiof.no/albums/rick_danko.html
Thanks to Jan Hoiberg!
I actually emailed arista when they canceled the re release and got an answer That it was aborted and there were no more plans for it's release.
Maybe we could petition them.

- Too soon gone! When I think about the handful of people that I miss, Rick is usually first. I met Rick once at a solo concert in an L.A. club. He sat down with us between sets and toasted us. I am fortunate that I get to sing some of his songs with The Jack Fate Band. Rest In Peace Rick, you are still loved on this earth. Thank you Carol.

- Isn't it wonderful how beloved this gentle and flawed man is even years after his death? We all can only hope to be remembered this fondly. I wish I had been able to see him perform live...

- What a great site for a great man. I use to see Rick Danko down at the Horseshoe Tavern on Queen St. in Toronto. These shows were always great. Rick always sounded good and he always seem to be in a great mood. Since his death I have really missed these shows and to know there are others out there that feel same gives me a warm feeling. So i think i am going to roll a number, start a fire and put on "Times Like These" and be thankful for what he left us.

- My first site of Rick was on "Festival Express" singing "No More Cane" with Jerry and Janis. It was there I saw that quality that I now know is so unique to Rick. I love him and the music he gave us. I also love your work Carol and can feel your love for Rick through your words.

- JAS--thanks for the kind words. Regarding Rick's solo record, I don't know the specifics re: ownership of masters, licensing, etc. Often, when a record is re-released on another label, it involves a licensing deal--which is a very broad term and can mean a number of things. There are many types of licensing deals--an agreement can be for just a period of time, or for one re-release, or forever. Ownership of masters is another issue. Generally, as far as I know (but I am not a music attorney) whoever owns the masters retains the rights.

- Hi Carol,
Thanks for a great site and your BandBites column. They are a wonderful addition to the legacy of Rick and The Band. Now a question for you. Do you know why it is that Rick's first solo album is not in print? I would think that someone would want to either put it out as it was originally released, or better yet, remaster it and include some bonus tracks. I know there are many people like myself who were never able to get the original release on EMI or the re-release on Edsel. I would think his family would be willing to help get it back in print, wouldn't they? Perhaps you could address this in the future on this site or in ta BandBite. Thanks again and keep up the good work!

- Thank you all for stopping by! This is a work-in-progress, so please continue to check back as I add more "stuff." Jon--that's great that you visit Rick. And I think that anywhere you go in or around Woodstock, you will feel his spirit. His "footprints" are just about everywhere there in those mountains and winding roads.

Also saw some of your picts over there and would love to see more. Working with Danko must have been an amazing ride. Saw him and The Band many times over the years What a great bunch of guys and musicians-one of kind.
God Bless. Jack, MA

- Hi Carol!! I love the site and especially love that picture of Rick. I have actually met you after one or Rick's shows back in the early 90's and want to thank you for the kindness that you showed to me and my friends. Rick was very lucky to have you in his corner. I look forward to more picitures and, hopefully, some of your memories of Rick if you would be willing to share. Thanks Carol!
