I would like to start by showing you some of the mind-blowing power
that Squidoo has.
Taking a look at one little lens, one page of free web space, will put
things in perspective, and perhaps even light a fire under your butt to
get started!

Today, as I am typing, I took a look at the Top 100 "Most Visited"
lenses. You can find that list here:

(Note: the Top 100 Lists on Squidoo are rotating based on results of
the past 14 days. So, the lens you see at #1 will be the most visited
lens in the last 14 days combined.)

Today, I see "Free Movies Download Full - Download Full Movies for
Free" in the #1 spot.
This lens is located at:

Not a very exciting or complicated lens, is it? Today it is #6 in the
Entertainment category and is ranked #118 over-all for all of Squidoo.
Go ahead... take a look. I'll wait.

Now, let's talk about this lens.
I went to my friendly keyword tool
http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com and typed in "free movies
download".
That exact keyword is getting 1456 searches per month as of this
writing. Related keywords off this one keyword phrase totaled 6,612
searches. Hmm, not bad.

Now, I go to Google...and I type in "free movies download"
Returns with quotes = 147,000 (and this Squidoo lens is #3)
Now, type in "free movies download" WITHOUT quotes...
Number of returns? 80,400,000.
Yes, Eighty MILLION! And this lens is #5.
Number FIVE out of eighty million returns!
Yikes! So, you're thinking this must be an old, established lens,
right?

Wrong. This lens appears to have been made sometime about April
5, 2007. That makes the lens about 2.5 months old. A free little
web page, less than 3 months old is dominating a major keyword.
I would say that this bit of information we have gathered about this
Free Movie Downlaod lens is pretty darn impressive on its own,
wouldn't you? A highly-searched keyword, top exposure in Google...
not too shabby.

But wait, just how much traffic IS this lens actually getting? Squidoo
claims it to be the "Most Visited Lens" for the last two weeks.... so,
what kind of traffic are we talking?

So, I wander over to a little tool that gives me traffic numbers for
tracked lenses.
This lens is seeing over 1000 visitors a DAY. Looks like 1000 - 1300
visits to that lens each day... every day.
So, tell me.... Would that help YOUR online business?

1. Find the Hole.

When choosing a topic for your lens, not only do you need to go thru
the proper channels to investigate keywords, but you also need to
look for the "hole" in Squidoo. You don't want your lens to get
tossed in Googles supplemental index and this can happen when
there are too many lenses on the same subject.

Make a list of potential keywords, then take each keyword and enter
it into a Google search. Yes, I know you would do this anyway, but I
want you to take it one step further.

In the query box on Google, enter your keywords. First check to see
if a Squidoo page doesn't already come up on the first page.
If you see a Squidoo lens, click on it and take a look.

Is it good? How is its lens rank within Squidoo? Can you do it
better? Yes, you can "piggy-back" off the Google placement of an
already existing lens, but it's not optimally what you want.
Now, if you initial Google search doesn't return a Squidoo lens on
page one or page two, don't dance for joy, yet.

Do another search. Same keywords, but add "on squidoo" to the end
of the query.
As an example, "puppy treats" "on squidoo"
Yes, two terms, each in separate quotation marks. We want to
isolate your keywords into a specific phrase and get returns that start
with only Squidoo lenses. All Squidoo lenses are indexed as "The
title of the lens- on Squidoo" as the title line on a Google search
return.

When your results come up, look for actual lenses that are returned.
No actual lenses on Squidoo? Yes! You're in luck! You found a
"hole"!

But, what if there ARE lenses? Click on them. Look at them.
Remember, for some reason, these lenses didn't come up on page
one or page two in your initial keyword query. Are these other
lenses in supplemental? (You can read the green writing underneath
a listing and see... it will say "Supplemental Result")

Are these other lenses any good? Must not be if Google isn't
returning them as a quality return for that query. If they are good
lenses, BUT are in supplemental, it is quite possible that the lens has
a lot of copy/pasted content.

If you decide to choose that keyword, make sure your lens is not
only "better" than the others, but is full of UNIQUE, keyword-focused
content.

2. About that "Quality Content"

Going back to that #1 Most Visited lens.... to tell you the truth, I
don't see a tremendous amount of quality content. I have not gone
as far as to see if the lens-master actually typed his/her own words
for the product descriptions, or if they are copy/pasted from the
products site, but I sure have seen many other lenses with a LOT of
totally unique content that have not done near as well as this
particular lens.

That said, let's say this lens is the exception and not the rule.
Make sure your lens has genuine and ORIGINAL content...at LEAST
in the intro. Don't allow Google to see your lens as "duplicate
content" and toss you into their supplemental index.
If you wonder about the keyword density of your content, copy/paste
your content into an analyzer and see how it's working.

Make sure your content gives Google the density it needs to rank you
for the keywords YOU want.
