Rider Waite Tarot Cards | All About

The Rider-Waite Tarot Cards are the most popular tarot deck used in today's English Speaking society. Originally published in December of 1909, these cards have been used my thousands and thousands of people around the world.

The Rider-Waite Tarot Cards are designed in the same fashion as all other tarot cards, with 78 total cards in the deck, however, the Rider Waite Tarot Cards are known for being intricately detailed with many symbols related to the card. There is also a great use of colour that is used symbolically.

This page will discuss the history of the Rider-Waite Tarot Cards and also a little bit about the tarot card history in general.

Smith, Waite and Rider

All of the images found on the Rider Waite Tarot Cards were illustrated by artist Pamela Colman Smith. Many newer Tarot cards try to imitate her designs including Universal Waite tarot deck, Golden Tarot, Aquarian Tarot Deck and Nigel Jackson Tarot to name a few, but there are many many more.

Ms. Smith was not the idea master though. She was under the direction of A.E. Waite who was an academic and aparent mystic. The Rider part of the Tarot name belongs to the Rider Company who published the cards.

Of Course!

anupma says:

Yes I do, but to some extent. I do not stop working whether the tarots show favorable or unfavorable predictions.

Lironah says:

I'm staying away from these things. I've had my fortune read enough times to know I'd become a horrible tarot addict if I ever learned. Lol.

jetsantana says:

Yes I do, as a matter of fact I've got a set of Rider Waite. I was introduced to Tarot cards by an Irish white witch ( yes.. I did say witch ..lol ) while I was working in UK some 20 years ago.

No Way!

Occult Tarot Decks

The Major Arcana - These are the 22 trump cards that are found in a tarot deck and these cards are without suits. They include the Fool, The Magician, The High Priestess, the Empress, the Emperor, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Strength, The Hermit, Wheel of Fortune, Justice, The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement and The World.

The Minor Arcana - There are 56 cards in this part. The 56 cards are divided into four suits which include ten numbered cards and four court cards (King, Queen, Knight and Jack) of each suit. The four suits are known as different names to different subcultures and have changed over the years. Here are what you may know them as. I also indicate what element the suit corresponds with.

1. Swords (corresponding with Air)
2. Batons also known as wands, rods or staves (corresponding with Fire)
3. Coins also known as pentacles or disks (corresponding with Earth)
4. Cups (corresponding with Water)

The Four Court Cards

How the court cards correspond with a specific element.

Within a Rider-Waite Tarot Cards deck there are four court cards. Below you will find the specific element that corresponds with each of these cards.

King - Fire
Queen - Cups
Knight - Air
Jack/Page - Earth

Because of this, certain face or court cards are very powerful. Therefore the King of Wands, the Queen of Cups, the Knight of Swords and the Page of Pentagrams very strong cards.
