Riga

Riga has a beautiful medieval centre that has had a dark past of occupation. Now, Riga has an unfortunate reputation as a "stag do" weekend destination, but this does a great disservice to this attractive city that boasts a long and violent history and the buildings to match. Bypass the dodgy night clubs an head for the museum of occupation or the churches in the old town to witness this city that sits on the border between the germanic and slavic zones of interest. Better still, visit Vilnius and Tallin too and get a feel of the differences between the Baltic States.

The Latvian riflemen - the Red Rifles - played a significant role in the Bolshevik revolution and Russian civil war. For this reason, their monument, now outside the museum of occupation, is contentious.

Access to the sea

A trade route for millenia, the river Daugava is the probably reason for Riga's location. A settlement known as Duna Urbs was recorded in the second century CE on the site of modern day Riga where the river forms a natural harbour.

Medieval streets in Riga

Central Riga can give the feeling of travelling back in time. The cobbled streets and narrow alleyways of the old town give an impression of the 19th century.
