Origin Of The Name DELTA
Delta (upper case Δ , lower case δ) is the 4th letter of the Greek alphabet.
A River Delta Δ is named after the letter delta because it has the triangular shape of the upper-case Δ
named after the shape they create:

Location: North-America, MexicoThe delta is home to several endangered species including the Yuma clapper rail, the totoaba fish and the vaquita porpoise.

With its extensive mangrove mud flats, swamp vegetation and sand dunes, it is characteristic of many tropical and subtropical coasts. The vegetation cushions the shoreline from wind and wave action while the mangrove trees provide a habitat and food for aquatic and terrestrial plant and animal life. As seen in this picture, the tributaries and distributaries of the Ganges and Brahmaputra Rivers deposit huge amounts of silt and clay that create a shifting maze of waterways and islands in the Bay of Bengal.

New Study led by the University of Colorado at Boulder
"A new study led by the University of Colorado at Boulder indicates most of the world's low-lying river deltas are sinking from human activity, making them increasingly vulnerable to flooding from rivers and ocean storms and putting tens of millions of people at risk.""24 out of the world's 33 major deltas are sinking and 85 percent experienced severe flooding in recent years, resulting in the temporary submergence of roughly 100,000 square miles of land. About 500 million people in the world live on river deltas."
