Road Trips For Kids %u2013 Some Tips

Often loved by adults, loathed by children, the road trip is a regular staple of modern vacation travel. While adults enjoy the sights and smell of adventure, children languish in the back seat wondering when we're going to get there with nothing to do but perhaps annoy each other and unintentionally, their parents. You can take the initiative to head this off as a parent. When packing for your next road trip, remember to bring the maps as well as some things to keep our kids occupied.

You can help your kids get as much fun out of road trips as you do by planning in advance. In addition to traditional road games the whole family can play like I Spy and license plate games, you can give your kids a map of your route to follow along. You can also help your kids draw their own map of your destination with major destinations and stops. There are also things you can provide for the kids to work on their own:

1. Kids are officially part of the digital age: they love computer games and the internet is filled with free online games for kids that can be downloaded at no cost. Using your preferred search engine, do a web search for free online flash games including dress up, driving, puzzle, skill, action and other games for both boys and girls, and download them to your laptop. Some great sites to check out are thekidzpage.com, which features games, jigsaw puzzles, and educational games, as well as kidsgamehouse.com which also features jokes. Get your kids involved. Maybe they can help find their favorites. Once the games are on your laptop your kids don't need the internet to play.

2. Load up with coloring books and colored pencils to occupy your kids. Colored pencils are a great alternative to crayons since they don't melt in hot weather and so cause less mess. Make sure to bring lap desks or something hard and flat for them to work on and keep your kids busy for hours on end.

3. If your kids are a bit older you can provide them with kids' magazines to read such as Highlights, Sports Illustrated Kids, and National Geographic Kids. Many children's magazines feature stories your kids can share with you as well as pictures and games like riddles, word puzzles, memory games and more.

4. As long as you're bringing along your laptop for the kids why not bring along a few DVDs for them to enjoy? Bring along your kids' favorites and be sure to bring headphones so that you can enjoy music or quiet conversation in front while they enjoy a movie in the back seat.

There are lots of ways to survive road tripping with your kids. Use your imagination. Remember what you liked to do at their age. It's a great way to share an experience and spend time together. Be creative. Getting your kids to enjoy road trips as much as you do will make you a happy family on the move!
