Robert Allen Zimmerman Like A Rolling Stone

Ranked #7,987 in Music, #218,641 overall

A hero is someone who understands the responsibility that comes with his freedom. - Robert Allen Zimmerman

Robert Zimmerman is perhaps one of the most influential literary and musical figures of the mid - twentieth century. His writing is profound. He is a true word-smith. He was born on May 24th 1941 in Duluth, Minnesota. his family were Jewish Russian emigres. His talent and fame mean that huge amounts have been written about him. His performing name is Bob Dylan.

Everyone no doubt has a Robert Zimmerman favorite. A song that struck me the most was 'Hard Rains Gonna Fall'. It was Roxy Music's cover version that caught my ear. I didn't know before hearing it what it was about, but as soon as you listen to the lyrics the horror and chaos of nuclear attack become very clear.

Like many performers the fame that came to Robert Zimmerman didn't just happen. His passion for music began at a young age. he had knock backs, people didn't 'get 'him at first. I like people like that. A bit heretical, a rule maker rather than a rule taker. It was clear too that his antipathy to the superficial nature or rock and pop showed he was an acute observer of life. Inspired by Wood Guthrie and dropping out from college were all portents of things to come. His first album was released in 1962 with sales of just 5000.

"A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do."
Bob Dylan

"All I can do is be me, whoever that is."
Bob Dylan

"Colleges are like old-age homes, except for the fact that more people die in colleges."
Bob Dylan

Robert Zimmerman Poetry 1957?

written at the Herzl Camp

bob dylan 1957 herzl camp

"A drunken man got mad at him / Because he barked in joy / He beat him and he's dying here today / Will you call the doctor please / And tell him if he comes right now / He'll save my precious doggy here he lay / Then he left the fluffy head / But his little dog was dead / Just a shiver and he slowly passed away."

This extract comes from a poem called Little Buddy, and is controversial. Allegedly written at the herzl camp there are claims it might be originated by someone else by the name of Hank Snow

I really enjoyed this lens about Bob Dylan. He and his music certainly had an amazing amount of influence on an entire generation. I still love to listen to "Like a Rolling Stone".

I saw Bob Dylan in 1978 at the 'Picnic', which was a one day festival held at Blackbushe Aerodrome in Surrey England. It was not long after the album Desire was released and one of my all time favourite Dylan tracks is Isis.

A fun look at a music icon! Sadly, Duluth cannot coax him back for an appeareance though they have invited him many times, but then, "the times they are a changing". I grew up in northern Minnesota and have always wanted to see Dylan live.
