A Pittsburgh Style Sandwich

All on One Bun

type=text

Originally from Pittsburgh, I am used to eating the most unbelievable 'Game Day' food on this planet. There is just something amazing about the food served in the Pittsburgh and surrounding area's dive bars. This sandwich is of the Pittsburgh style 'Eat it All on a Bun'. You may not be familiar with this sandwich style and you may not be a Steelers fan, but I am sure you will soon be a huge fan of this recipe. We call these game day sandwiches 'Roethlisbergers' after Ben Roethlisberger, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback. Additionally, this eatin' advice is being made available to you today from a daughter of an eye-witness to the Immaculate Reception.

Game Day Sandwich Recipe Ingredients

What's On The Roethlisberger Sandwich

List of ingredients for the Game Day Sandwich (The Roethlisberger) Recipe

1 Bag of Sauerkraut (or large can)
3 lbs pork roast
1 bottle of dark beer
1 package of kielbasa
12 pieroges
Kaiser rolls
Sour Cream

Note: When I double this recipe I do not add an additional beer. However, if I triple it I then add another beer.

How to Make The Game Day Sandwich

Cooking the Roethlisberger

type=text

Basically you dump strained sauerkraut into a large Dutch oven, add a pork roast. Take a knife and poke holes in the pork and then pour a bottle of dark beer over it. Turn the heat to medium-high and cook until it begins to boil. Turn the heat down to low, stick a lid on it and wait for 4 hours. This gives you time to drink a few of the remaining beers. After the 4 hours cut the kielbasa into about 3 or 4 inch pieces and slice down the center. Turn the heat to low-medium and stick the lid back on and wait for 40 minutes. Then add pierogies, turn the heat to medium, stick the lid on once again and wait another 20 minutes. Slice the pork roast and get ready to eat.

Alterations to the recipe:

1. Share the beers with others.
2. Don't drink the extra beers.

You Will Need One of These

It you double or triple this game day sandwich recipe you will need a large Dutch oven.

Some people match their cook wear to their kitchen but not us. This is our favorite. Why? It sports the colors of our football team, The Pittsburgh Steelers.

How to Serve the Game Day Sandwich

The Making of The Roethlisberger

type=text

Pay attention because the way you serve this is important, and separates the men from the boys. On a big Kaiser roll, you slap on a slice of pork, a fork full of sauerkraut, a link of kielbasa (split down the center so it sits on the sandwich), and a pierogi or two or three. Next, you top the whole mother-lov'n mess off with a healthy dollop of sour cream. We refer to these Game Day Sandwiches as 'Roethlisbergers' but whatever you would like to call this fabulous gastrointestinal creation works equally well. This central European influenced manwich is best served with some big fat pretzels, and of course a few more frosty beers.

Sandwich Review

by The Boy from da 'burgh (My Husband)

type=text

Make no mistake, this is a two-fisted sandwich, in the same ballpark as the famous 'Dagwood' (circa 1930), so it takes a little coordination to get 'er down. I usually devour one of these during pre-game, washing it down with the remaining couple of brews. This is highly recommended, Eatin' and Drinkin' on Pro Football Game Day because if you wait until the game starts, and things don't go well, you'll at least have had enjoyed a good meal. Do whatever you want, but personally, I begin my kick-off ritual by cracking open a cold IRON CITY beer (compliments of the Pittsburgh Brewing Company), sitting on the couch, and drinking at a rate dictated by the flow of the game.

    The recipe sounds good. Is that really how tall the sandwich is? Imagine walking in the door with a sandwich that huge? You'd be the hero of the day.

    It's not as large as the Dagwood but it is big.
