Round Dancing

I made this lens in memory of my Grandmother who passed away April 28, 2009. She was 92 years old, so she hadn't Round Danced in a while, but she did for years and years during my childhood. I don't know much about it other than it's similar to Square Dancing, so I wanted to research it a bit and thought it would be a nice tribute to her.

I found a few old photos of her all dressed up in her dresses and petticoats and added them to the lens. She had so many petticoats. All different colors and all arranged on this sort of tree/stand in her bedroom. I thought it was the prettiest thing when I was little. It looked like it was filled with giant carnations.

Anyway, just wanted to say I love you Gram, and I hope you can see your lens from heaven.

Yup, she knew about Squidoo...she was cool like that. ;)

What Is It?

Round dance is a choreographed ballroom dance. A leader, or cuer, calls out the steps for the dancers. All of the couples dance the same steps at the same time in a circular pattern counter-clockwise around the dance floor.

Round dance step sequences are borrowed from dances including the two-step, waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, jive, cha cha, rumba and more.

It's done all over the world... from North America to Europe to Asia and Australia.

I'm finding it very hard, however, to find as much information as I'd like. Square Dancing is much more popular.

So...more info to come as I find it.

What a great tribute to your Grandmother. I had never heard of round dancing but it looks like she had a ball doing it.

Christine, I'm very sorry to hear about Erline. I started square dancing and round dancing with Vernon when I was 5. My whole family danced with and knew Erline very well. We will miss her very much. I still keep in touch with Vernon. By the way my mom made the vest Vernon is wearing in the picture. I use to teach classes with Vernon too. My family and I were a part of Waltham twirlers and Vernon's Round Abouts. We knew Erline well. She was a very special lady. My best to you and your family. Debbie (Spinale) Bell & Family.

Erline was one of the nicest people on this earth. I first met her back in early 1970's when she was a student in my Round Dance Class. We became very close friends and she started working for me in my Record Shop and worked for me from the 70's until 1998. She was always my second mother and our friendship was as strong as any mothers could be. We did everything together and had a ball dancing and travelling and just having fun. I miss her terribly. She may be gone but will never, ever be forgotten. I love her to piece.

While I had never heard of round dancing, I enjoyed seeing how it's done. Looks like lots of fun -- crinolines and all. A lovely tribute to your grandmother.

Trust me Louis it is one of the best activities you will enjoy for a lifetime. You will meet a lot of people and just enjoy being yourself. I can tell by your smile that you would be a good dancer.

Aww, this is a great homage. Your gram is such a cute little thing and full of pluck!
I've never heard of Round Dancing before, but did a lot of Scottish Country Dancing when I was younger.
I love the Japanese clip, and the way they've blended Japanese and English culture and language for their own version. Japan does this amazing east-west alchemy on everything it can get its hands on.

I love to Cajun/zydeco dance. I just wish my husband liked it as much as I do!

Sorry for the loss of your grandmother, but it's nice to know she had such fun with this dancing. I've not heard the term "round dancing," but I believe I've seen it and just didn't know what it was called. Love the photos of your grandmother.
