Secondhand Clothing - An Economical and Environmentally-Friendly Way to Shop!

Ranked #42,009 in Entertainment, #508,555 overall

I love clothes, shoes, and accessories and am a bargain hunter extraordinaire! I also care deeply about the environment, which makes me feel good about buying a lot of my clothes second-hand (which does not mean sacrificing style and quality!) ;) Really, there's nothing better than getting a compliment on your dress/purse/earrings all the while knowing that you only paid a fraction of what it would have cost new (and did something good for the environment - reduce, REUSE, recycle!) Whether you're a die-hard thrifter like me, or more interested in higher end consignment shops, I hope this lens is informative and helpful in your shopping adventures!

What kind of shopper are you?

I'm a die-hard thrift store shopper. I can spend hours sifting through the racks looking for that one incredible find, and when I find it, I'm beyond thrilled! I know there are others out there like me, but I believe we are a rare breed. Most people want shopping to be quick and painless, which I totally understand! I often come home after an evening of thrifting completely exhausted, but somehow it's worth it to me. For those who can relate, I am including information on the best thrift stores, shopping tips, etc. (I'm just getting this started, so check back for updates!)

And for the majority of the population who might like the idea of saving money and helping the environment, but don't have the time and energy to shop at thrift stores, I am including information on consignment stores, which tend to be more selective in what they carry (less junk to sort through and everything is clean!) Of course, I'm partial to my own consignment store (rubycanary.com) but I plan to add links to other stores that I think sell quality clothing at great prices as I come across them.

I'm also including links to articles on the environmental impact of buying second hand, since that is a large part of my passion for this subject. And of course, I'm eager to hear what you have to say on the subject. Scroll down to take a poll on your favorite thrift store or share your thoughts on anything related to this lens.

Stylin' Consignment Stores & Thrift Shops

Well obviously I'm gonna start out with a link to my consignment store, since I'm a little biased towards that one, :) but I plan to add links to other stores that I think sell quality clothing at great prices as I come across them, as well as helpful articles on shopping at second hand stores and clothing/shoes/accessories in general.
Ruby Canary Consignment
My online consignment store - Ruby Canary Consignment! My website currently only shows a sampling of my items for sale, but every page has a link to my booth on Bonanzle.com where you can browse the entire selection. For the uninitiated, Bonanzle is an awesome online storefront that allows buyers and sellers to chat live in the seller's booth and encourages buyers to make offers on items listed as "Or Best Offer" (which all of mine are).
TheThriftShopper.com
A national directory of charity-driven thrift stores - locations, hours, and user ratings of stores in your area!
Thrifty Planet
The Thrifty Planet Resource Guide © 2008 is the collective database of businesses in the United States that sell recycled or previously owned merchandise.

How Exactly Does This Help the Environment?

While the link between your pocketbook and buying second hand is pretty intuitive, the link between second hand clothing and environmentalism might not be as obvious. Here are some nifty articles on how it all works.
emagazine article on recycling clothes
Just because that old shirt you used to love is too threadbare to wear anymore doesn't mean it has to end up in a landfill. "Consumers don't understand that there's a place for their old clothing even if something is missing a button or torn," says Jana Hawley, a professor of textile and apparel management at the University of Missouri-Columbia. "Ninety-nine percent of used textiles are recyclable."
