Running Tips for the New Runner

This lens offers some running tips to the new runner.

If you're a new runner, building up your routine should be a careful process. When you start running, think about building your time, rather than building your mileage.  It's easy to get carried away, but just as easy to end up with an injury.

One of the best beginner running programs I've seen and personally used is the program over at Cool RUnning. Their program, "The Couch to 5K" program is excellent. It's a gradual build from walking to running, adding increments of time. It helped me gradually build up my lung capacity, as well as the comfort level in my legs. I couldn't believe that somebody who had never run before, was soon running 45 minutes at a time! This made it a simple process, by following their program.

One quick tip: softer surfaces can help when beginning. You may want to choose a track, treadmill or grassy area  that can add cushion and shock absorption, where as concrete and pavement may add extra stress on impact, especially when starting out.

Enjoy the lens, and I hope you find some of these "running tips" useful!

What's Your Foot Strike Pattern?

Are you a supinator? Maybe you're a pronator, or do you even know? When it comes to running, understanding your foot strike pattern can help you prevent injury. When you know how your foot strikes the ground, you can then choose a shoe which neutralizes this action and help keep your feet and legs in a better state.

There are different places where you can get your foot strike or gait analyzed. Check with your local running store first, because they are trained to help you find just the right shoe for you.

If you'd like to learn more about shoe selection, you can find more information here.

Preventing Injuries Before They Occur is Key

When it comes to running, preventing injuries is key. Part of the process is getting into good habits like warming up and cooling down, wearing proper running shoes, not doing too much too soon, and understanding and practicing good nutrition.

1. Stretching both before and after you run can make a huge difference in how you feel, and help prevent injury. Treat your muscles properly before and after, and you'll be rewarded for your time and effort!

2. Proper running shoes are crucial. If you tend to roll in or out when you move, and don't neutralize this, it can cause discomfort in your feet, knees and hips.

3. Doing too much too soon, is often the case of injuries. Know your limitations, and build up gradually. Not only will your muscles be ready to excel, but your lungs will be ready for the extra action.

4. Your body needs fuel to run with. Learn good nutrition, and feed your body the fuel it needs. Starving doesn't do anyone any good. You can find an excellent resource on sports nutrition on Squidoo here.

Building Strength and Endurance

Are you running too hard? If you're looking at long distance running, not sprinting, one thing you should look at is your breathing. Can you talk when you're running, or are you straining and breathing hard?

You can build your endurance by going on longer runs. Slowly increase your distance, and you'll see the benefits of the gradual build.

Rest will help you become a better runner. Rest? Who needs rest, you say. You do! You should allow your muscles time to recover between training sessions.

Keeping your body in balance means training other areas of your body. You will run better if you're taking care of all of your body!

In a nutshell:
Increase time and distance, don't push yourself too hard, remember to allow for recovery, and stay balanced!
