The Ryder Cup - The Best Golfers in the US against the Best from Europe
USA ends long drought and beats Europe in the 2008 Ryder Cup
The 2008 Ryder Cup goes to the Americans. Europe has owned this event in recent memory and was good to see the Americans win (at least I think so). The 2010 Ryder Cup at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales sure promises to be exciting.
Will the Americans be able to win again? Will the Europeans show that 2008 was just a fluke and that they are the best team players?
Basics about The Ryder Cup
Match Play explained
The Ryder Cup is played every other year between teams of golfers representing the U.S. and Europe. Below you'll find results of each competition, and each match within each competition, plus records, history and more. The Ryder Cup, one of the last great sporting events founded on prestige rather than prize money, spans 34 competitions over 77 years.
Match Format
Match Play
All games are played under Match Play rules, where the result of each game is determined by the number of holes won. The order of play for the first two days is Foursomes in the morning and Fourball in the afternoon. The final day's play will be in Singles format.
Fourball (four groups of two two-man teams)
"Fourball" play is a match in which each member of the two-man teams plays their own ball. Four balls are in play per hole with each of the four players competing. The team whose player has the lowest score on that hole wins the hole. Should players from each team tie for the best score, the hole is halved.
Foursomes (four groups of two two-man teams)
"Foursomes" play is a match where two golfers play together against two other golfers and each team plays one ball. The golfers play alternate shots (player A hits tee shot, player B hits second shot, etc) until the hole is played out. Team members alternate playing the tee shots, with one golfer hitting the tee shot on odd-numbered holes, and the other hitting the tee shot on the even-numbered holes. The team with the better score wins the hole. Should the two teams tie for best score, the hole is halved.
Singles (12 groups of two one-man teams)
"Singles" is a match in which one player competes against another player. A player wins the match when he is up by more holes than there are holes remaining to play.
Pairings
Each Team Captain independently submits the order of play for his Team to the appointed tournament official. The lists from each Captain are matched, resulting in the "Pairings". Please note that the players in pairings can be modified by the Team Captains only if a player is ill or injured. Pairings are subject to change and should not be considered final until play begins for a particular match.

Ryder Cup on Wikipedia
The Ryder Cup is a golf trophy, donated by Samuel Ryder, which is awarded biennially in an event called the "Ryder Cup Matches" between teams from Europe and the United States. The matches are jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour, and alternate between sites in the United States and Europe.
The competition began following an exhibition match in 1926 of a team representing American professionals against a similar one representing the British PGA on the East Course, Wentworth Club, Virginia Water, Surrey, UK, with the first competition taking place in 1927.
Early matches between the two sides were fairly even, but after the Second World War, repeated US dominanceBritain won only once from 1947-77, and matches were frequently very one-sided. led to a decision to extend the representation of the British & IrishThe first golfer from the Republic of Ireland to play on the Ryder Cup team was Harry Bradshaw in 1953. Fred Daly from Northern Ireland first played in 1947. team to include continental Europe in 1979. This change was partly prompted by the success of a new generation of Spanish golfers of the time, including Severiano Ballesteros. He and Antonio Garrido were the first Spaniards to play in the event in 1979. Europe has also been represented since then by players from Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and Sweden.
As a result of this change the event has enjoyed more competitive matches, with Europe winning seven times and retaining the Cup once, compared with seven American wins.
